From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-Against the tumultuous backdrop of the French Revolution, two orphaned sisters, Camille and Sophie, struggle to survive on the streets of Paris. Possessing an inherited gift of magic from her once-aristocratic mother, Camille begins "turning" coins and cards for rent and food. When her debt-ridden, abusive older brother, Alain, steals their meager earnings, Camille is determined to save herself and Sophie. She conjures deeper, darker magic, creating a double identity, Baroness Cecile Descharlots, with a new appearance, elegant dress, and access to the gaming tables at Versailles. Even as she prospers and befriends courtiers and vicomtes, Camille's double life begins to fray. Her aeronaut boyfriend, Lazare, is hiding his own secrets. She suspects an ardent court admirer, Vicomte Seguin, of sinister intentions and destructive magic. Her pursuit of fortune in the royal court conflicts with her empathy for the common man. Then, Sophie disappears. Multiple threads of history are woven into this tale: the role and persecution of magicians in the French court; experiments with balloon aeronautics; contemporaneous attitudes toward women, queer folks, and biracial nobility; the opulent, decadent lifestyle of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI; and, the rising outrage of impoverished citizens. Informative historical notes and a French glossary are appended. Distinctive characters, vivid 18th-century images of Paris and Versailles, lively French-infused dialogue, an appealing heroine, and an upbeat ending propel this lengthy romantic fantasy. VERDICT Romance and fantasy readers will enjoy the magic realism, ruse and tension of Camille's double identity, authentic historical references, and Camille's daring, passionate spirit. A must-have.-Gerry Larson, formerly at Durham School of the Arts, NCα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

I loved how the first pages pull you into the time period and magic system with a fun, light glimpse of a candle maker searching for his missing wig and finding the coins in his till are nothing but bewitched scraps of metal. How it deepens, introducing the thief, Camille, and the magic she uses as she struggles to keep herself and her ailing sister off the streets following their parents’ death from smallpox. How it pivots, to show us a different side of Camille as she sprints across a field to save a handsome aeronaut when his hot air balloon flounders, at the same time introducing the revolutionary science of the time. How it deepens again, as Camille’s last remaining food and money are stolen, forcing her to turn to a more dangerous magic to pay the rent, and to more risky marks – the aristocrats at Versailles. Then pivots again, and again until the reader is fully enmeshing in the politics at the brink of the French Revolution.Trelease’s writing is cinematic in its detail, the characters are fresh and diverse, the historical aspects of the book researched with great care, and the plot is always moving forward. Enchantée is a stand-out, perfect for readers who love fantasy, love historical fiction, or simply love a worthwhile story well told. It makes pre-revolutionary Paris relevant to today’s teens.Highly Recommended!

Magic ripples through ENCHANTÉE. Gita Trelease’s imagination, the language she uses, the relationships she builds between characters—that is where the magic begins—and of course, there is la magie (both petty and dark) that the main character, Camille Durbonne, wields. This is my favorite kind of book to read, one where I am swept up in the writing, loving each line as much as the story itself. One where the characters take your hand and bring you into the pages with them. One where magic seems entirely possible.Camille is a character both vulnerable and determined, driven by dire situations to make a better life for her and her sister—even by using dark magic. As she travels back and forth from Paris to Versailles, the contrast between her true life and her false life blur. Who she loves, who she befriends, who she makes an enemy, all collide. And because each character is so well-developed, I cared about their fates, and their relationships, as much as Camille’s.I would have to recite ENCHANTÉE from start to finish to share all the things I loved about this beautiful book!

This is an exquisitely written book filled with glittering magic, young love, dark deception, and breathtaking adventure. I absolutely loved the characters, and in particular Lazare. He's a fascinating and wonderful romantic lead for YA. Complex, kind, and daring. With such beautiful writing, it's easy to become swept up in Camille's journey, her quest to do what's best for her family mixed with the allure of hidden magic and a new life at court. (And the allure of a certain young aeronaut!) Fans of historical fantasy will devour this book like I did. You're in the hands of an incredibly skilled author -- and it shows from the very first page. Enjoy!

Enchantée is a marvelous book that brings together several different genres--it's a romance with a touch of fantasy magic set during the French Revolution. Each of these elements raises the stakes for the others: the lovers' timetable is compressed by the threat of revolution, the magic allows the heroine to identify with aristocrats even as she resists them, the romance plot makes the magical elements have much more emotional resonance than in many other fantasy novels. The result is an absorbing and beautifully written exploration of women's power and its limitations in a time of social constraints. Enchantée is truly enchanting, and you will find yourself using that same word for it!

The story of Camille Durbonne is like warm melted chocolate. It woos you with rich velvet details, excites your passions and lingers, so sweetly, on your senses. Her story is rags to riches, but the added twists of dark magic, hidden threats, and a secret double life makes it a heady and unique blend. From the cobbled shadows of the Paris streets, to wild and erudite experiments in hot air balloons, all the way to the lace and luxury of Marie Antoinette’s court, Trelease will deftly lure you through each scene, ramping up the romantic tension in perfect time with the danger. In each new scene, you’ll be betting on Camille to win the day, save her sister, and discover the true prince of her heart. And like all the best hot chocolates, it will leave you sated, but wanting more. Put this on your MUST READ list for 2018. You won't be sorry.

What a heartbreakingly boring book. It had such an interesting premise and I was so looking forward to reading this, but it’s a dud wrapped up in a pretty cover. The first few chapters held my interest, but the further along it went the more it lost me until I just couldn’t keep reading. Our protagonist (Camille Durbonne) is so dull and, dare I say, stupid at times that I just couldn’t bring myself to care about her or her motivations. In fact all of the characters seem rather flat, even the magic, the setting. The writing somehow managed to suck all of the inherent glitz and shimmer out of the premise and the location and make it all so lackluster. Like champagne with no bubbles. Such a shame.

Enchantée combines my love of lush historical world-building with magic! Set just before the French Revolution, Gita Trelease transports us from the bustling streets of Paris to the decadent glitter of Versailles Palace! Not only is the magic fascinating, but the author's use of describing the world is its own kind of magic, too! I also loved the contrast between magic and science in how Camille falls for the dreamy Lazarre, a hot air balloonist, and how they are swept off their feet by love and revolution. Just marveilleuse!
