Donald Wheeler has the reputation for writing clear, simple and easy to understand text books for beginners and this book is no different. To me as an experienced Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, it is rather too simple and lacking in depth. There are other books on SPC that are much more comprehensive. .

I purchased this book believing that it would give me insight to SPC and more specifically control charts, and as a supplement to text books I currently own by Montgomery. I can say that this book is OK for beginners who have not had any exposure at all to college level SPC or Control Chart classes or books. However, if you already own any college level text book regarding SPC, Quality Control, or Control Charts, this book will be too elementary for you.

Best SPC book I've read. Stresses the importance of control charts and clearly explains the statistical theory behind them. This text explains various process metrics and how they should be used. Or more importantly, how they are commonly misused. If you desire a solid understanding of SPC fundamentals, I highly recommend this book.

This text seems to have been designed primarily for accessibility, and it has certainly achieved that. It pretty much explains in simple terms (anything above high school math) everything you need to create and use SPC and other control charts. This was more basic than what I was shooting for, but it's easy to skim through parts. I imagine the target audience was lower-middle management or factory line workers.More in-depth information and proofs are supplied for some aspects, though it is stressed that these methods have been found useful empirically and that was their primary aim, and although a good bit of theory informed their design, they aren't necessarily theoretically rigorous. In other words, they are pragmatic rather than academic.The techniques are certainly useful. I'm starting to apply them for software.

Bought this book after an ME professor recommended it during a polymer product manufacturing class. The book was cheap and covers the fundamentals.

Hard to follow in some places but seems like an alright book to accompany a college level course. Give you many opportunities to practice concepts though.

Extremely helpful in understanding and utilizing SPC concepts from the three minds that have really lead the SPC effort in the USA (Deming, Chambers and Wheeler).

The only reason I gave this a 3 is because it doesn’t have a full callendar so was unusable for us. The art is beautiful. When you look at it, you can’t really see the little boxes at the very bottom of the picture. It was just very disappointing. I should have looked harder. Especially for how expensive this calendar is.

Love the artist and the images and the fact that this item is currently hanging on the wall above my stocks stand. Highly recommended.

My original review is below, however I am revising this review:This book was printed nearly 20 years ago, but the content is still very relevant, I suppose that the reason for the small print. In order to read this book, I have excepted the fact that I must have a very bright light, and I am able to get the content.Now about the book and the materials. It is right on the mark to get a beginner up to par to understanding the RV electrical systems. I have a good mechanical knowledge and some electrical background but not a mechanic, nor a RV technician. From this books content I was able to determine the cause of a problem in my newly acquired RV and repair it That alone is worth far beyond the cost of this book. I believe I need to understand these systems so that I can diagnose problems when I am on the road.I highly recommend this book to be in every RV if you are the type who prefers to diagnose and fix items when possible. The only reason for 4 vs. 5 stars if the size of the print and the fact that I cannot get the companion copy on the Kindle at no additional cost.First look review (I was angry when this was written!):This book is printed in such a small font that I am unable to comfortably read the content. It is the same size font as the next smallest on my kindle. I normally read on my Kindle whenever possible. In this case I bought the hard copy because it has so many charts, tables and pictures, which are a major part of the content. I recently purchase another book in hard copy and to my surprise it then allowed me to down load the Kindle version at no additional cost. I found that to be great, and if that were the case with this book I could possibly re-access my rating after reading all of the content. In the the mean time, I refuse to buy the book twice, once in print then again on kindle in order to get the full content.

So I am new to RVs. And read half this book. I learned so much about electricity. Some was simple. Some is hard to grasp for me. For others will be easy. Great well written book. So as I am enjoying learning about new inverters and converters I decide to see when is was published. Wow. Its old. And IM old! I have a 1996 RV so in some ways its the perfect book. And from my research somethings have just not changed that much. But over 20 years a lot of technology has changed a lot.How ever for me personally I have been working as an audio engineer for 30 years, I have actually wired 3 basments and a few studios and still. Chapter one taught me so much it opened my world.I just feel that the hey almost should not sell a book that has not been updated and people should know. Unless I read it wrong.But i do love this book odly being a teck book. But im kind of a nerd like that.

I am buildingf a teardrop trailer and decided to do some of the electrical work myself. But first I need some help understanding a 12 volt system. That's why I purchased this book. Excellent book. I was a neophyte regarding electricity, batteries, 12v sys vrs a120 volt system. After reading this book I began to understand what electrical wiring and battery operation is all about. A great reference book because I can't absorb it all at one time

This book is short on the information for wiring to gensets. It only mentions that they might be wired to switches on the dash but that is it. No diagrams. I also did not find information on the wiring for the dash switch that starts the engine from from the house batteries.

I'm new to RV'ing and wanted something to understand the electrical systems, particularly in troubleshooting any issues, and hopefully to help me determine if the problem was something simple that I could deal with, or something I should pass on to the professionals....and in that case, to understand if I was getting the run-around from a repair shop. So far this book has helped me in all respects. It starts off with basic electronics....what constitutes a circuit...differences between 12v DC, 120V AC, amperage loading, etc. Very good foundation. I have repaired some simple problems with my 12V system. So far I've had help with two 120V AC issues I passed on to professionals. I'm not sure this book is for everyone, but my guess is the only folks seeking this type of book would have a good foundation for self help and the theory behind circuits.

An great book for its time, but much of the info regarding products, manufacturers and even 'modern' techniques are from the mid-90's, when written... so the reference material is useless. But the discussions of electrical fundamentals is solid and well written - Ohms law is still the same, naturally. It has an extensive chapter on batteries, including their design, maintenance and types but doesnt even mention lithium (again its 25 years old material...).So worth reading to learn fundamentals but useless as a modern parts, suppliers, techniques reference.

I am an RV technician, and I LOVE this book. It truly goes into areas that a technician often doesn't have the time to explore. It exploits typical weaknesses within electrical systems and their mods to fix them. The section on alternators is top notch. It's a little bit like the gravy a technician only gets by talking shop with someone who's been at it for 35 years. For the average RV user... if you have any desire to learn the electrical system, rest assured - this is what you want. It's twice or three times the book I bargained for, and the knowledge within it goes above the calling of it's title. RV's are not always made with the end user in mind, and not only does this book help you learn (or confirm) the ins and outs of RV electrics, but it teaches you how to IMPROVE those systems, big time. I might add, as a technician speaking here... I'm also talking about very expensive RV's at times. They don't always build things like they should, at any price tag, and the author of this book is beyond expert in his understanding of that concept.

Too old a book with to many old explanations and illustrations. A re-write or update is definitely in order.

Lets start with the most important aspect of this book. If you suffer from back or neck pain, this is a MUST read so that you can avoid the cascade of evaluations and treatments that are unlikely to help and often cause great harm (not to mention the enormous and unnecessary expense)..My name I Brian Nelson. I am an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine and I am quoted extensively in this tour de force. I first met Cathryn many years ago after she was given my name by a colleague. She called me for the first of many interviews and I had a chance to get acquainted with a classic investigative reporter. You know the type: persistent, devoted to the truth, scholarly, curious, demanding that obscure medical jargon be explained in easily understood terms. She spent almost ten years on this book which likely explains why it is so outstanding, and carries such credibility. Meticulously sourced and backed up with peer reviewed research, you can believe what she has written.I supervised the treatment of approximately 150,000 spine pain patients over that past 25 + years and I have seen every treatment come and go. I have heard stories that would break your heart. I have followed the exploits of spine surgeons I believed should have been jailed to punish them for the trail of broken bodies left in their wake, I saw money corrupt an industry designed to enrich providers and hospitals medical device companies at the expense of patients, I saw doctors collude with attorneys to extract as much money as possible from insurance companies. You may find Cathryn's book infuriating but after finishing it, she may have been too lenient.Too be clear, I also know many reputable practitioners who consistently strive to deliver the right care to patients regardless of the financial concern. I know many fine surgeons, chiropractors, physiatrists, pain doctors, etc. who are a credit to their profession. Nevertheless, there are far too many of the opposite character who shamelessly exploit a system that allows spine care to remain dysfunctional.This wouldn't be a huge problem if patients could differentiate the good from the bad but they cannot. As Cathryn so amply demonstrates, patients are easily fooled by professional web sites enhanced with state of the art search engine optimization. Patients desperate for relief are easy marks for slick copy writing promising completely unrealistic success rates while ignoring risks and costs. Look at the number of patients who were willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket for unproven treatments that often made them worse. I was always astounded in my own town (Minneapolis) that surgeons known to have terrible outcomes were nevertheless full. A nice office with an espresso machine and a smiling surgeon in an expensive suit and a starched white coat is no guarantee of good care but many patients are quick to to believe that it is.I used to tell patients when I was doing surgery that I didn't make any money talking to them. 95% of my income came from operating. And I also learned early on that because of the vast difference in orthopedic knowledge between me and my patients, I could talk most anyone into surgery if I tried ("He would never tell me I needed surgery if it wasn't true"). This is a sacred trust given to surgeons but unfortunately, not all have the character to overcome this enormous conflict of interest.. The same applies to pain doctors, chiropractors, therapists, injectionists, etc. All have the ability to offer and perform unnecessary care and get paid for it. Health care providers- including hospitals- are well aware of how much they earn and what their expenses are. If new medical evidence shows that a major source of revenue is ineffective, how many will discontinue its use and perhaps go into the red for their practice or hospital? This is why , even in the face of the evidence provided in this book supporting the ineffectiveness of opioids, spine surgeries, injections, and MRIs there has been little change in frequency.That our payment incentives have had the unintended consequence of often harming patients has been recognized by payers (government included) and efforts are underway to change. Can we devise a system that pays for outcomes rather than paying for services regardless of effectiveness? Unless we do, I fear things will not change.Finally, I agree completely with Cathryn about the importance of exercise. It is not that no one ever needs spine surgery or an injection or an MRI. It is that the vast majority of patients should not undergo these procedures unless they given themselves the chance to avoid them by engaging in a good intensive exercise program along with counseling in fear avoidance or underlying false beliefs creating tension. Get on a program and stay with it for the rest of your life and you give yourself the best hance of being as good as you can be.Thank you Cathryn for publishing what I believe could be one of the most universally helpful medical books ever written.

I first learned of the book when I heard Ramin interviewed on NPR while running errands in my car. From the radio interview, I knew that Ramin is opposed to back surgery. I also knew that her book was generally well reviewed by Jane Brody. I wanted to find out what alternatives she recommends. The first 40 percent of the book is about surgery, epidural steroid injections, chiropractors, pain drugs and other conventional treatments. Ramin is very good at pointing out all the potential problems and risks associated with these treatments. She savages chiropractors as charlatans and generally rails against the orthopedic surgery ‘industry’ as being too highly motivated by the “pay per procedure” economic bias baked into the current US healthcare system. And the problems of rampant opioid addiction are all too obvious. In one case, epidural steroid injections, subsequent research I’ve done lead me to believe that Ramin exaggerates the likelihood of seriously adverse reactions or results, but there are legitimate questions about how much benefit such injections have over time. Early in the book, Ramin suggests that some readers may want to skip ahead to the second part of the book where she describes better “Solutions.” I read most of the first part but when it started to become repetitive and predictable, turned to what alternatives the author recommends. This is where Ramin is disappointing. She is a strong advocate of professionally guided physical therapy, with a strong bias toward intensive and demanding programs most likely to be found at certain universities and medical institutions, mostly located in urban centers like Boston, San Francisco, Toronto, (or my favorite, Zurich, which is so handy and inexpensive!). Based on my own experience, I can easily buy into well-designed exercise programs being a good way to address lower back pain. However, Ramin tends to be all over the place, and never lands on one or two recommended programs that people who otherwise have jobs to do and lives to live can fit into a normal life. Most of the programs are better suited for people who somehow can go off for an intensive on-site three week program in another city. Granted, if you go for surgery as an alternative, your life will be disrupted at least as much and probably more, with no better likelihood of success. However, the programs Ramin favorably describe don’t end with the three week program but require continual follow-up forever. I’ll accept that the exercise solution cannot be a “one-and-done” undertaking but to be realistic it needs to be something that people can learn and then follow on their own, perhaps with the support of professionally prepared DVD instruction. Ramin does not equally support all PT. She’s skeptical of PT programs affiliated with orthopedic surgery practices, suspecting that most of them are “feeder” programs for eventual surgery. I’m not sure I buy that based on my own experience. But when it comes to other PT programs, as long as it’s intensive, expensive, or requires exotic equipment, Ramin tends to be a believer (Pilates being a partial exception). In sum, Ramin is better at explaining what to avoid in dealing with lower back pain. She’s an enthusiast for rigorous and well-designed physical therapy as an alternative but is literally all over the place in suggesting which program to follow and how to fit it into a life with normal work and family obligations and economic limitations.
