Suleiman the Magnificent was the source of much history.
This is a short book about a ruler of the Ottoman Empire. The book starts with a timeline and notes Suleiman the Magnificent lived for 70 years which, for the time, was quite old.The book covers the Ottoman Empire history and the use of boys as tribute to become the Sultan's slaves. Being a brother to a Sultan was hazardous since the Sultan could legally kill his brothers.The role of concubines is covered along with how the influence of women increased.,Suleiman was a poet and there were hundreds of artistic societies. As with almost all rulers he got an army together according to his set-up and they attacked Hungary and Iran.There are also some Sources listed at the end of the book for more information.
a nice, easygoing report on the life and actions of one of the most powerful men in the European history. Though, doe to the intended fast and more readable overview, the characterisation of the actions and importent personalities involved remains rather superficia.There are some mistakes too.The author mixed the town of Szeged with the fortress of Sziget which siege caused the delay of Sultans campaign against Vienna, thus saved the Habsburg monarchy. During the siege of Szigetvar and preceding its final capture under command of Mehmed Pasha Sokollu, in 1566, Suleiman passed causing the fast withdrawel of the huge Turkish armada to Belgrade - to welcome and support Suleiman s son Selim as a new Ottoman sultan...A piece of history of enormous importance to Hungarians and Croats as well...Still, to be recommended😃
A unique book to add to my historical knowledge base. I had simply heard the name so I knew nothing about this historical figure & the Ottoman Empire. This was a well researched book on a figure who you not normally read about.That’s the great thing about Captivating History is they provide information on figures you might not have read about in detail.
Rating: 4.5/5In general, I enjoyed the book - its humorous style, simple facts, and organization (by roles and responsibilities). Good quotations and examples from the life of book's subject. Good ending which makes the reader more interested in learning the lessons from history. It would only be improved by a map of the area discussed and a family chart to keep the names straight.
Not knowing much about the Ottoman Empire and the Sultan's behind it, this Captivating look into the history of Suleiman the Magnificent was eye opening and interesting! An intriguing read about a man, his family and the people he ruled.
