Based on a great Chinese legend that contains a lesson for us all, well told.

Whatever happens, happens, for good or for ill. A man teaches his friends about the twists of fate, as he takes what comes with little complaint. What seems good for him turns bad, and vice-versa. And thus all learn a bit of zen. Acceptance. It's an interesting little story, and I wish I got to see the puppet that comes along with this! Sadly, it was a library book, so no puppet for me. But just on the book quality, I actually like this a lot. Kids deal with so many ups and downs, and this book teaches them to just go with it, for all will turn out in its own way.I don't think there's much repeat value here, for most kids, however. I'd say borrow it from your library, and if they keep requesting it, then it's time to buy. But, overall, it seems like a one-read kind of book.

This is the second book I have read from Ed Young, a Caldecott Medalist from the city I live in - Tianjin, China. In The Lost Horse, Mr. Young beautifully retells a Chinese folktale. The story is about a wise man named Sai who lives on the northern frontier of China. One day his strong and fast horse is terrified by a thunderstorm and runs away. Everyone tries to comfort Sai for his loss, but he does not believe that losing his horse is necessary a bad thing. A few days later the horse returns with another strong and fast horse. Everyone congratulates Sai on his new blessings, but he does not believe it is necessary a good thing. The next month Sai's son rides the new horse and is thrown off. His leg breaks, and everyone once again tries to comfort Sai. Once again Sai says that what has occurred is not necessary a bad thing. Later in the year, China is invaded and all able-bodied men have to fight. Many die in battle, but Sai's son did not have to go to war due to his injury. Sai's son learns from his father that life is full of twists and turns. Things may not always be as good or as bad as they may seem. Although this is a children's book, much can be gleaned from this story. Pastel and watercolor collages that are similar to traditional Chinese paintings compliment what Publishers Weekly says is among Young's best works. $7 is an absolute bargain for such a book. I highly recommend it.

Efficient text, coupled with sweeping illustrations, saturate this Chinese tale of happenstance and fortuosity. Sai is a wise man living in Northern China. Having few possessions, he takes things as they happen, for better or for worse. When his valued horse gets lost, he believes it may not be a bad thing; the horse then returns with a mare. Sai finds harmony in taking the bad with the good. Young's artwork is portrayed in subdued oils that radiate with a chalk-like appearance. Soft hues fade into another, giving an impressionistic view of the Gobi Desert. The art is often too relaxed at times; on a few pages, the texture of the canvas is plainly visible. However, tinges of life in China hundreds of years ago take form for an indelible rendering. Display this recommended book with other Chinese folk tale picture books during Chinese New Year. Although targeted for 4-6 year olds, children up to age 8 will also enjoy this book.

This book was pretty bad. Typos go with the territory in some books but these were awful. It was hard to figure out who the author was talking about 1/2 the time. The he/she, his/her mistakes were ridiculous. What was the point of introducing Madelyn’s family once and never reading about them again? Unsafe sex? Really? Between a lawyer and a mob boss no less?! Yuck. Because Enzo was sexy, an up and coming lawyer decided to possibly throw away her future and break the law, including but not limited to committing perjury? Completely unbelievable. Insta-love, marriage and babies, when a few pages prior Enzo was debating on killing Madelyn? Not likely. All in all, this was a pretty terrible book and complete waste of time. Do not recommend.

WOW amazing read by Nicole Fox. Enzo dark Mafia Boss and Madelyn the lawyer assigned to his case. Engaged in a hot steamy passionate relationship that put her in danger. This is dark romance with danger lurking around the corner with intense, intriguing, hot chemistry between the two main characters and a cast of secondary characters that add to the story.Fast paced storyline with likeable characters that come to life and keep you intrigued and turning the pages rapidly and rooting for their HEA❣️❣️Explosive 🔥chemistry with an intense, undeniable connection 💞If you love smoking HOT, Raw, Uncontrollable Insta-Love, you will love this book!! A must read.Grab your copy today and start reading. Enjoy happy reading 📚"I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review."

This is another book in the Marino Crime series. This story follows Enzo and Madelyn. Enzo is know as a very dark mafia boss. Madelyn gets i to a bit of trouble and she is assigned as Enzo’s lawyer by her firm. Once Enzo meets Madelyn he decides he has something more in store for her and his mind won’t be changed leaving her without many options. Some twists and turns to keep you interested. A decent read. I voluntarily received an arc copy of the book.

So, when Nicole asks you to review one of her books, sit back relax and enjoy the ride! The story is a page turner, full of mysteries and drama. that will keep you captivated and invested in their story. Madelyn is a lawyer and was assigned Enzo Marino`s case . The story is dark, gritty and yet you get pulled into this amazing story for which I reviewed an arc with a lot of pleasure.

***I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.*** 4.5 stars. He made her an offer she really couldn't refuse. Good book. Really enjoyed the plot line and was so hooked I had a hard time putting it down to the point that I "had" to finish it the same night. Needless to say, the next morning was a bit rough, but definitely worth it!

This is a another amazing story by Nicole Fox. This is a brilliant dark mafia romance that I couldn't put down. It has a brilliant storyline that I absolutely loved. The chemistry between them sizzles throughout this story. A fantastic story that I would absolutely recommend.I voluntarily review advance reader copy of this book from the author.

Enzo is a dark mafia boss, and Madelyn is a lawyer who is assigned to his case by her firm. This is a well written story which is steamy and action packer, which all had me intrigued and hooked throughout, and I cannot wait to read more from this talented author, whose work I recommend for all.

I absolutely loved reading my arc copy of Enzo by Nicole Fox. This book is amazing and will keep you completely captivated. The story was full of action and excitement with plenty of heat. The characters were phenomenally written with unmistakable chemistry. This is an absolute must read.

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee. One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives. It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. A driven entrepreneurial type who is looking more or straightforward advice on building your business, achieving goals and finding ‘success’, then I encourage you more-so than anyone else to pick this book up.It has helped me make difficult business decisions, cut through the unimportant details and roadblocks, optimize my time, and improve my relations with my clients and really everyone else in my life for that matter. It is a book for the true winners, who understand that karma is practical, and that compassion is the path to real success. It is a book that I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I feel indebted to the author and translator for bringing its wisdom into the world.

As with so many books, we endure the scholarly and erudite reviewers who claim to know which text and translation is the most recondite, the most accurate, the most true to the original. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

gift for grandson--he really lied it

Even more than the Meditations, this work can be used to introduce undergraduates to the thought of Descartes. The basic parts of the Cartesian revolution are here--the Cogito, mind/body duality, starting philosophy anew--without the detailed justifications that have been proven wrong by later developments.Cartesianism is obviously, as a system, fraught with errors and so this work is of real interest only in the history of ideas. Wittgenstein answered the Cogito in one sentence, "But how does Descartes know that there is such a thing as a personal I if he doubts everything?" And modern developmental psychology understands the rudiments of knowledge in a way impossible in Descartes' time. A fortiori mind/body dualism. Nobody can now assert the separation between the body and the mind that Descartes makes.Yet, the doubt was not only important in philosophy but also in the development of science. Descartes, along with others, had to eliminate the pseudoscientific part of Aristotle's physics if the scientific revolution was to begin. Thus, even though Cartesianism is of interest only in the history of ideas, this work should be read by every undergraduate simply to understand the course of Western civilizationAs an aside, it's interesting to speculate on why the Cogito found such contemporary success. For centuries Europeans had been willing to submit their reason to divine authority, both that of the Bible and the Church, and suddenly a meme spreads that everything should be doubted and only that which is in conformity with reason should be obeyed.Perhaps the wars of religion, the Inquisiton's persecution of Galileo and the celebration in Rome of the St. Bartholemew's day massacre had sufficiently eroded trust in the divine authority of the Church that a new civilization was able to emerge founded not on faith but on reason. if the Catholic Church had recognized this new civilization coming into being and not fought the new ideas with the old tools of the Inquisition and military force the need to doubt everything might not have spread like it did. But since the new ideas were met with nothing but force the authority of the Church was obviously itself open to question. In other words, if the Church had allowed the most outstanding minds of the pre-enlightenment era to think and write freely within the Church universal doubt might not have found such success and Western thought would not have been burdened with such false premises.

This is a review of this particular edition/translation, not of the original work. This is an excellent edition to study with if you're just coming to the Discourse, for several reasons:--The translation is very readable and flows nicely. In some places I even found the translation made more sense than the translation in Cottingham, et al. (which is also good)--The explanatory notes are enormously helpful, and there's usually at least one note about something said in each paragraph. (They don't summarize the whole paragraph, btw, so don't be expecting that.)--There's a sizable & informative introduction.

This is quintessential Descartes, and a concise, eloquent and candid expression of the main themes of his philosophy. In my review I wish to stress a particular aspect of Descartes's method which is neglected in most commentaries, including that of the present translator, namely the fact that it is directly modelled on the axiomatic method of Greek mathematics, and Euclid's Elements in particular. Descartes makes it quite clear that his intention is to widen the scope of the mathematical method to philosophy in general:"I was most keen on mathematics, because of its certainty and the incontrovertibility of its proofs; but I did not yet see its true use. Believing as I did that its only application was to the mechanical arts, I was astonished that nothing more exalted had been built on such sure and solid foundations." (9 = AT 7)Indeed, Descartes's definitive statement of his method is such an apt description of the Elements that it could easily have been written by Euclid himself as a preface to this work. Here I quote it in its entirety and point out the obvious parallels with Euclid."The first [principle of my method] was never to accept anything as true that I did not incontrovertibly know to be so; that is to say, carefully to avoid both prejudice and premature conclusions; and to include nothing in my judgements other than that which presented itself to my mind so clearly and distinctly, that I would have no occasion to doubt it." (17 = AT 18) This is of course a perfect description of the way Euclid bases his entire work on a few evident postulates and common notions."The second was to divide all the difficulties under examination into as many parts as possible, and as many as was required to solve them in the best way." (17 = AT 18) Just as, e.g., Euclid's proof of the Pythagorean theorem relies on some 28 previous propositions, and so on for all other theorems."The third was to conduct my thoughts in a given order, beginning with the simplest and most easily understood objects, and gradually ascending, as it were step by step, to the knowledge of the most complex; and positing an order even on those which do not have a natural order or precedence." (17 = AT 18) Again it is hard to imagine how any work could fit this description more perfectly than Euclid's Elements. The last point in particular is something of a peculiarity of mathematics. In mathematics, when faced with two equivalent statements, one picks arbitrarily which to prove first and which to derive as a corollary, and this has nothing to do with any kind of causal hierarchy between them."The last was to undertake such complete enumerations and such general surveys that I would be sure to have left nothing out." (17 = AT 19) Cf., for example, Euclid's exhaustive and systematic treatments of "geometric algebra" in Book II and beyond, irrational magnitudes in Book X, and regular polyhedra in Book XIII.Descartes immediately goes on the emphasise again that his method is modelled on mathematics:"The long chains of reasonings, every one simple and easy, which geometers habitually employ to reach their most difficult proofs had given me cause to suppose that all those things which fall within the domain of human understanding follow on from each other in the same way, and that as long as one stops oneself taking anything to be true that is not true and sticks to the right order so as to deduce one thing from another, there can be nothing so remote that one cannot eventually reach it, nor so hidden that one cannot discover it. And I had little difficulty in determining those with which it was necessary to begin, for I already knew that I had to begin with the simplest and the easiest to understand; and considering that of all those who had up to now sought truth in the sphere of human knowledge, only mathematicians have been able to discover any proofs, that is, any certain and incontrovertible arguments, I did not doubt that I should begin as they had done." (17-18 = AT 19; cf. 16-19 generally)

Scribbling the Cat is a strange and unsettling book. Like Fuller's two other Rhodesian memoirs, Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight and Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, it's hauntingly evocative and elegantly written. Once more, I was effortlessly transported to Southern Africa, "a land of almost breath-taking beauty or of savage poverty; a land of screaming ghosts or of sun-flung possibilities; a land of inviting warmth or of desperate drought" (143). But unlike the other two Rhodesian memoirs, Scribbling the Cat is elusive and dark and ultimately it loses its momentum. Fuller's charming sense of humor and endearing optimism are largely absent here, replaced, instead, by meandering reflections and a sense of foreboding that is never truly resolved. When reading fiction, I normally try very hard to separate my feelings about the author from my attitudes about the book. With memoir, however, that's a little bit harder to do, because the author is selling not just her story, but also herself, to some extent - her values, impressions and presuppositions. And while I had started to develop a sort of benign "girl crush" on Fuller after reading her two other memoirs, this one left me questioning her character a little bit, and the book as a whole.Instead of focusing on her childhood and family life growing up in Rhodesia, this memoir centers on Fuller's friendship and travels with a man whom she calls "K," an ex-soldier who fought on the losing side of the Rhodesian war. She meets "K" while visiting her parents' fish and banana farm in Zambia, and despite her father's warnings to steer clear of him, Fuller, who seems to be suffering from a kind of spiritual malaise, quickly develops a kindred connection with the man as they travel together alone, often in very intimate settings, through Zimbabwe and Mozambique. "K" is very much reminiscent of Stanley Kowalski , a volatile, choleric soul trapped in a shell of hyper masculinity. It's clear throughout the memoir that Fuller finds herself both repulsed by and strangely attracted to "K", which is problematic, since she is married with two children. Throughout the book, Fuller, who is so transparent in her other memoirs, remains silent on the appropriateness of this arrangement.Fuller probably wouldn't have been able to write this book had "K" not developed romantic feelings for her shortly after their first meeting. And more than a few readers, myself probably included, seem to think that Fuller exploits "K's" feelings order to get the goods---that is, the material she needs to write a compelling story. She's also on a kind of spiritual journey herself, and she thinks that if she can just figure out "K", then she might be able to make sense of her family's own involvement in the war. She expresses her desire to "label ["K"] and write him into coherence," and, by extension, herself. But "K" is a complex person, a professing "born again" Christian who is tormented by the ghosts of his past and driven by an unpredictable brew of sincere faith, erratic superstition, debilitating guilt and blind rage. By the end of both her literal and metaphorical journeys, we know very little about "K," and very little about Fuller and only a little bit more about Africa. Her goal - "to patch together enough words to make sense of [their] lives" (239) - is never realized, and only two major insights are communicated: that war indiscriminately breaks people's bodies and souls and that Fuller indiscriminately breaks men's hearts. The first insight I already suspected before reading this book and the second one I was sad to discover.

I read Ms. Fuller's first book strictly by accident. I thought Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight would have been a political view of the struggle in Rhodesia between the white settlers and the indigenous people. It wasn't, however, and while at first I was disappointed as I kept reading I found a brilliantly told tale of a family that lived in Rhodesia that is very similar to many families I know all over America.Scribbling the Cat is another Fuller memoir set in Africa, and this one is even more personal. The first book tells the story of the Fuller family, and as the mother is the focus of the family the story is truly a mother daughter tale. This book is a story about who Alexandra Fuller became, not how she grew up, and I love it.Just as in the first book, this is a story that is distinctly rooted in Africa, but if you change some of the names and some of the locations, it truly has played out in America as well. Fuller meets a former Rhodesian soldier, warrior more like it, and is awestruck by his lifestyle. He is now a gentleman farmer living in an area that doesn't have many white gentleman farmers, especially ones who in the past were killing their African gentleman farmer counterparts.Fuller does a great job of bringing the reader along on the journey. Her writing style reminds me in a way of Hemingway. Hemingway had a way of making me feel the heat in Key Largo, feeling the strength of the fish in Old Man. Fuller really made me feel the mud on the trail to the farm, the smell of the fruit bearing trees she passes, the heat from the African sun, and most important I felt the affection that the old soldier began to feel for Ms. Fuller, and the confusion Ms. Fuller felt for him.All in all a great book by a great writer. Alexandra Fuller is one of the truly great writers alive today and while she lives in America her heart still resides in the Africa of her childhood. She seems keenly aware of the problems the white Rhodesians inflicted upon their native residents. I definitely feel her sense of, I hate to say it because it is far more complex, but guilt for what happened to the Africans subject to white Rhodesian rule. Her escort, the former Rhodesian soldier, was part of the problem, a very bloody part of the problem, and she truly struggles to get past the things he did. She doesn't make him a villain, but she doesn't deify him either. I can also feel that she would take issue with my use of African in that last paragraph. When I say Rhodesian I am thinking of them as white European settlers. In Ms. Fuller's case, however, she is just as African as any black African subject to Rhodesian rule. Reading between the lines Ms. Fuller is in many ways a victim of the same colonialism many black Africans suffered from. She was white, but hardly wealthy.Throughout this journey I truly had a sense that I am seeing Africa through the eyes of an African, something that Ms. Fuller can't shake, because it is who she is. One great thing I got from this book was fair notice that my simple categorization of the problem, this is white, this is black, this is African, this is European, the European whites were oppressive, the Africans are the victims, speaks to my ignorance of the reality many people are living in these former colonial areas that can't be categorized. Good people had to do bad things to become free, good people did bad things to serve a belief they later realized was wrong.

A brutal story beautifully written. If it were not for the superb use of words, this would have been an unpalatable read. There were times when I felt the author was indulging in voyeurism and exploding the fragility of the soldier. But this is a story that needs to be told. Wars produce no winners and here we read of the tragedy of those who lose.K may appear as a bizarre character, but, having experienced the Mozambique civil war first hand as a hostage of Renamo, K was chillingly real. The scary fact is there are thousands of damaged humans - the debris from past and current civil wars - trying to make sense of their lives. In a strange cathartic way, reading this story helped.

Alexandra Fuller is one of those authors who, for me, can't write enough. After reading every book of hers, I feel like I've lived through intense emotional struggles and awakenings with doses of laughter on the side. She is a gifted writer who is so in tune with her interactions with others, and then she shares the experiences with incredible insight and graceful eloquence. This book is a little different from her childhood/adolescent/family books, however it has the same vivid descriptions of Africa and the same, sometimes shocking, truth about human nature. I really enjoyed it.

I've read many of the stories that originated in the Rhodesian Bush War including the "The Selous Scouts" writtten by their original CO Col Ron Daly- Lewis, which was earth Shattering, as far as I was concerned but this tale by Alexandra Fuller was written on such a human level that it gave a totally different angle to a similar war story but with so much humour and empathy. Totally worth reading if historically true stories are your forte

I read The European Discovery of New Zealand: The History and Legacy of Early Expeditions and British Settlements on New Zealand before I read The British Colonization of New Zealand: The History of New Zealand from Settlement to Dominion. I recommend reading these Charles River Editors books in that order. The first book provides useful information about the colonization of New Zealand and the interactions with the Maori. Reading this e-book one will learn that the British Empire used a different governing stance with the Maori as opposed to how they normally treated colonized people. This e-book will explain whether the Maori males or white men were granted universal suffrage first. Was New Zealand the first English-speaking territory to grant women the right to vote? It is interesting to note that New Zealand and Australia almost created a Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand. The primary reason that New Zealand did not enter into a confederation with Australia was that that the settlers of New Zealand considered themselves superior. New Zealand had fewer descendants from convicts then Australia.I finally learned why New Zealand troops are called “Kiwis.” Kiwi was a term of endearment that other Allied troops called New Zealand soldiers in World War I.This e-book is chock full of information about how New Zealand became a separate entity from Great Britain. This is a very interesting book, and I enjoyed it.

a delightfully written review on this beautiful country, its people and industries. It was helpful before my trip.

We all love to read history and I love it even more now that I am older. Being able to get a quick fix in about an hour is so wonderful. My thanks to Charles River Editors in coming up with all of these books. I can read and refresh my memory in just a little bit. I love these books! History at it's finest, in a flash!

Hope in Hell: Inside the World of Doctors Without Borders

Review

Bortolotti, a journalist and author, visited doctors, nurses, and nonmedical staff in Doctors Without Borders programs in Angola, the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, Haiti, and other countries, and reveals their experiences in the program. He provides historical information on the organization and its origins in France and describes stories of its volunteers, what they do, and the patients they treat, within the context of the political and cultural climate of specific countries. This edition adds a postscript to the chapter on Haiti. (Book News 2011-06-01)(about the first edition) Looks at the history, politics and motivations of MSF and its volunteers... analyzes the difficulties that MSF faces. (Tina Neville Library Journal 2004-10-01)(about the first edition) Inspired... Much of what Bortolotti reports is noticeably absent from the daily headlines, so this eye opening account is all the more chilling, and MSF's efforts achingly more compelling. (Donna Chavez Booklist 2004-09-15)(about the first edition) Describes but never romanticizes... Direct and evocative, this well-written book pushers readers to the edge of a world of grueling realities not know by most Americans. Recommended. (D.B. Hamilton Choice)(about the first edition) Emphasizes that much of the organization's work takes place not in war zones but in remote, impoverished locales. (Caroline Preston Chronicle of Philanthropy 2004-12-09)(about the first edition) All in all, I found Hope in Hell to be a nicely balanced book about this type of work/volunteerism that I've been curious about for years. (Norm Rooker Emergency Medical Services Magazine)(about the first edition) Some physicians still do manifest the noblest virtues of medicine... a worthwhile read for prospective international aid volunteers. (Philip B. Berger Globe and Mail 2004-10-30)Allows the reader a very honest look at MSF. (Alison Delory Medical Post 2004-11-16)It is in the considerable space that Bortolotti gives to the emotions of the group's staff members that the book really shines... authentic and inclusive... informative and touching. (Jerry R. Dwek New England Journal of Medicine 2004-12-30)(about the first edition) Traces the history of the world's largest independent medical humanitarian organization... grimly poignant. (Publishers Weekly 2004-08-09)

#390,265 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A thoughtful, human, and captivating look inside the world of MSF, through the eyes of veteran MSF field workers themselves. At moments philosophical, heart wrenching, hysterical, or frustrating, the writing of Bortolotti is clear as air, and the book gives an outsider the most authentic portrayal available of the Nobel Peace Prize winning humanitarian medical organization. To understand the mentality and culture inside Médecins Sans Frontières, this book is by far the best available.I am a veteran of Médecins Sans Frontières, and I speak from experience.

This book centers on countless medical humanitarians working in unsafe occupied countries, all because people (many times a mass majority) who have become victims are in need of grave medical care: Medical care which is not granted to them by their government. The giving of medical care is the intention of these organizations. It all started with a group from France called 'Medecins Sans Frontieres', and branched out to Doctors Without Borders, ect.In so many cases, medical care givers with all types of skills are needed for victim survival--those who have been exposed to and are surviving the aftermath of war and other types of social conflict. Much of the time survivers soon turn into refugees, all living amongst one another, and that is when, what seems like the smallest health problem, quickly explodes into an epidemic of huge proportion for thousands of people.Medical teams do their best to train the people of these communities for aiding with safe and proper medical care. While there, a health clinic is opened to treat all ailments, so any community members who are interested in learning are welcome to watch and learn for the future when they are on their own.In many countries,(at very young ages) soldiers are recruited and become disfuntionally ruthless and barbaric. Their hearts are infultrated with hatred, and their minds are impaired with the local drug and/or alcohol of choice. This is a lethal combination which adds more fuel to the fire in places where the average person's life has already been significantly altered by these dispicable soldiers who are dictated to continue on inflicting inhumane autrocities. Please read the book. It is full of stories of places around the world that are inflicted with pain and the need for human survival. And each area in the world where these true heros go to are quite interesting places. You will find gracious heartfilled stories in all parts of the book as well.I recommend this book highly for 'so many reasons'. And I am certain that I will re-read it one day, especially when I need a piece of humble pie for myself!

I'd been wanting this book for ages because as long as I can remember I've wanted to work for MSF. I really wasn't sure what to expect, and whether I'd still want to work for them once I'd read it! But I am happy to report nothing has changed...if anything, I'm even more driven! In this book, Bortolotti provides insight into the "real" world of MSF and gives potential recruits like me a better understanding of what sort of situations one would be found in, as well as what to expect of life within MSF. It's eye-opening and based in reality, that's for sure. I also knew very little about how MSF began, and the structural organization, which this book provides information on. Bortolotti writes with fictional flare, which makes it more interesting than non-fiction can sometimes be. He appears to really know his stuff, and has gotten down to some of the nitty-gritty that others may choose to ignore; or to describe things that may have been lost in the romanticism associated with MSF's type of work.I still want to work for MSF, and am grateful this book provided me with a better understanding and broader perspective of this amazing organization.

I'm a medical student and MSF was one of the reasons that got me into medicine. At first, it all seemed like a great adventure, I would watch videos of missions and think of those people as heroes. And while I still think that they are very brave and I deeply admire them, this book was very enlightening about the people that work for MSF, how their work is done, how MSF came to be, and how hard and challenging it is. It is a very good book.Humanitarian work is a great challenge. If you want to know more about MSF, in a more personal way, I also recommend Six months in Sudan, by James Maskalyk.

This is perhaps the most thorough, yet accessible, look into the work of MSF. I was struck time and time again by these brave and crazy people who pursue this field and the resilience of their patients. The book tells firsthand stories in various regions as well as the history of MSF, a truly comprehensive look. I highly recommend it and anticipate revisiting its pages in the future.

Everyone should read this book, because if you don't know about these issues, than you should. MSF is an inspirational organization dedicating to helping people in need due to war, natural disasters, poverty and other crisis. There are many humanitarian aid organizations, however MSF is a pioneering leader in going where countries won't even send their troops.Dive into the world of MSF, and the ethics, stories, and aid that they deliver. Hope in hell will not disappoint.

I have always been fascinated by Doctors Without Borders to the point that I am considering applying for a job with them. This book answers all my curiosities: it comprises personal stories as well as a descriptional of the institutional structure. Nor does it shy away from criticism. It will help me to make a more informed choice

Having worked with this organisation it was all very recognizable. I think it is a good, realistic book, providing valuable insight on life in an aid organisation.
