I was, at one time, an advanced Access user, but that was a few years and versions ago. Had to get back into it and up to speed quickly for my job, but needed more help than old knowledge and Google could supply yet still didn't need to be treated like a beginner either. This book is laid out perfectly. I can look up and jump directly to what I need, and I have yet to find an issue that isn't covered in plain, understandable language that gets my problem taken care of on the first try. Also love the very down-to-earth tips/tricks/hints/notes/warnings. Saved me a ton of headaches I would regret later in my setups.
This book is extremely thorough and very well laid out in a logical and step-by-step manner. The author doesn't miss a thing. All the explanations are thorough and easy to understand. Often, explanations are repeated when necessary, as if the author knows the questions that are popping in to your head as you work through the book. I never have to decipher the author's explanations, as often happens with other such books. I recommend going through this book from beginning to end, taking your time as you follow the steps and do your own experimentation and practice. I read every note, tip, warning, sidebar and figure. Everything is helpful. I already had a fairly good knowledge of Access, but wanted to fill in all the holes and thoroughly learn and review the application. This book has served that purpose perfectly. I'm very impressed.
I hadn't created an Access database for many years (10?) so this version was quite a bit different than I was used to. The guide helped me through the learning curve, and I had a workable database in short order. The book was well worth my investment to shorten the development process.
I have a nack for learning computer programs and decided I wanted to master Excel. I purchased this book and it has been the best decision of my young professional life.The text was very easy to read. It does a great job of explaining complicated issues and providing examples and practical applications.After having read the entire book I don't remember everything, but I have a good understanding of what Excel can do and know where I can find more information about how to accomplish it.I would highly suggest this book to anyone who works with spreadsheets. Chances are you can save a lot of time and headaches, and also become the star of your department with the knowledge you can gain from this book. You should read the parts you are familiar with to gain additional tricks you have skipped over. You should also read the parts you are not familiar with as they are areas you could be taking advantage of or may need to take advantage of at a later date.
One can say having repeated segments in each chapter is handy.. however I view it as superfluous and a waste of paper. My other major issue with the book is that it has mistakes in the case file exercises that if you don't catch them (or worse if you catch them & point it out to your prof) you may end up getting to re-submit your homework. I finally gave up telling the prof of the book errors and just did my homework. It's easier that way.I can't suggest you don't get the book as obviously you'd be using it as required text. I would suggest you read through your case files a couple times before actually DOING the exercises, and use the power of the internet for video tutorials if you are learning online.
Have been an Access user for many years (20+) but still have those "how did I do????" moments. This book helps because it starts at Step 1. Easy to read, yet concise. The index at the back is wonderful because I can go right to my specific concern. Well worth the price.
To whom it may concern--Access is not an easy program to digest--one has to want to learn how--Microsoft even has special technicians within the Office 2010 department that handle only ACCESS--so how easy do you think it is? This book is worth every penny; notwithstanding; I have yet to find any book in the Missing manual series that is not much better than any alternative offered by any other publisher. Not to purchase this book is being grossly unjust to yourself! The book has larger than normal fonts--use your glasses anyway--it is well-written and well-indexed. It is the best of all possible alternatives.Access 2010: The Missing Manual
I haven't actually used this book yet but I have the 2007 version and it was awesome. The book is presented in a very readable format: kind of entertaining but serious. It tells you step-by-step how to do things but also explains what is going on behind the scenes so to speak.There are tutorials that start out small and slowly expand so this makes a great book for someone who knows little about creating a relational database. It doesn't start out confusing the living bejeesus out of the novice but it still offers a lot more information than the average user would probably learn just by using the program. There are a lot of very useful tips and tricks that will improve your database creation skills. Overall I find that these missing manuals do an awesome job of developing skills. You can really get the equivalent of a 16-week college course out of one of these books.
