Simply put, this is probably the best book on Flathead V8 Ford engines in my library of probably 10+ books.The book focuses on the basics and it provided detailsI had not found in other books and manuals, e.g., removing a fuel pump.The quality and detail of the numerous photos is excellent. I would recommend this as the first book to buy about rebuilding flathead engines. Follow up with (1) Tardel & Bishop's "Ford Flathead V8 Engines" and (2) Joe Abbin's "Ford & Mercury Flathead V-8 Identification & Rebuilding Guide." Unless you are into really high performance rebuilding, these three should cover the subject well.

I've done these engines since I was an apprentice. (1957) Some general info, some 'new', as machinery and shop practices have 'improved'...But for modifications, there were 'papers' out in the '50s (Ray Brock, Roger Huntington, Barney Navarro, et al) that delved deeper into the subject.Good for light reading within wide parameters.

Great manual to disassemble, inspect and build a Ford flathead v8. Lots of step by step instructions and in color. Authors reasoning as to why he went with certain parts over other brands and where to get them.

Great book, well worth the price. I found this to be easier to read and more modern than "How to Rebuild and Modify" by Mike Bishop. The images at the end for torquing patterns are great and the pictures are perfect. I went back to the Bishop book and found it more useful the second time around, so the combination of these two can't be beat.

Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists. Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

I almost never write reviews about books, but I do want to make one thing clear:Anyone leaving a poor review based on the fact that Carine talks about herself, and/or that there was nothing 'earth-shattering' about what was written with regard to Chris and his motivations completely missed the plethora of nuance and sub-text, all of the things that weren't explicitly written but many people were capable of picking up on, probably hasn't experienced the content that this book engages with. Furthermore, this becomes even more obvious when people are still unable to grasp why a child who endured the violence of abuse would choose to leave home and behave in a way that's 'reckless,' saying that 'nothing was actually revealed' essentially translates into 'I don't think the abuse these children endured is significant, especially not enough to cause someone to do what Chris did.'For those who read this entire book, learned about the horrendous abuse that these two experienced as children, the petty and conniving harassment and manipulation that Carine endured from her parents for years, the painful grief that Carine felt after losing her brother and then seeing his name and image ridiculed and criticized by every average joe who thought that their input should be heard, and still came away feeling as though they didn't gain any insight into what drove Chris into the wild will simply never get it.Unfortunately, this book seems only to prove insightful to those that are either capable of understanding the magnitude of the toll that abuse takes on a person, reading between the lines and grasping what's not being overtly said, or those who didn't find Chris a deplorable person in the first place...I honestly can't imagine why somebody who freely takes every opportunity they have to prattle on about what a terrible person they think Chris was would choose to read this book AND then still feel compelled to leave a review.

While watching Into the Wild, the film, I immediately recognized that Chris must have been the victim of severe early childhood abuse. To socially and emotionally divorce one's abusive parents is the fantasy of all abused children, but Chris really went through with it. Now Carine provides the backstory to what was omitted in Sean Penn's film and in Jon Krakauer's book. She sheds light on the severe physical, emotional and psychological abuse suffered at the hands of two delusional, violent, narcissistic, manipulative and possibly psychotic individuals, who were ill-equiped to start a family in the first place.It is very brave of Carine to write this book, regardless of her writing skills (as commented upon by some other reviewers). The point is in the content: abusive parents are the worst thing that could ever happen to a young child, with effects lasting into adulthood. The abused child must overcome his abuse twice. Firs as the abused child, then as the damaged adult.If more people like Carine come forward, we will some day end all domestic violence. Carine's father was (and probably still is) a rabid dog who should be put on a leash.

If I hadn’t read George Mahood’s previous two books, Free Country, and Every Day is a Holiday, I probably wouldn’t have picked up his latest work, Operation Ironman: One Man's Four Month Journey from Hospital Bed to Ironman Triathlon. I have little interest in marathons, much less an Ironman Triathlon, consisting of swimming, biking and running, plus the added stress of a time limit for it all. But I loved the first two books, so trusted that I would be entertained again.I was not disappointed. After learning he had a tumor on his spine and needed back surgery, George bravely? foolishly? signed up for a French Ironman Triathlon, reasoning that a) he needed a goal to attain, and b) training for the triathlon would assist in his recovery from surgery. I don’t have the mindset of an athlete, and often questioned his reasoning and techniques, but I was totally engrossed in the book. I don’t mind admitting I blubbered a little during the final chapters.I heartily recommend this book, and if you haven’t already, do read his other works as well.

This is such a great book. George's writing is as wonderful and entertaining as always (I've read all his other books) but this was something special. I almost burst into tears when he wrote about looking at the bracelet his daughter had given him which gave him the extra impetus to forge on. It sounded absolutely crazy to enter an Ironman with only 4 months to "train" but his journey and the other people he writes about during this journey makes a wonderful book. I'm not a runner or a swimmer and I'm a only a recreational biker and I'd never read (that's present and past tense) a book about a triathlon - but I knew this book would be special and it was. Any book by George Mahood is worth buying and reading.I laughed out loud when I came across the first of his classic sayings - and other sayings are available. It was like encountering an old friend unexpectedly. This book is also educational. I thought he was pandering to Americans when he spoke of miles. I've traveled in the UK and apparently I didn't notice the British use miles and not kilometers. I didn't know that! What a book - entertaining, inspirational AND educational.

I thoroughly enjoyed George Mahood's latest book, Operation Ironman: One Man's Four Month Journey from Hospital Bed to Ironman Triathlon. I want to just refer to him as George, as though I really know him. His way of writing is very comfortable as though he is writing to a good friend. All of his books are like this. Chock full of information about this incredible journey from serious back surgery to running an Ironman ...and completing it.We get to know his wife and children along the way. George is a skilled, and I think, a natural story teller with a gift for making you feel as though you are along for the ride. As I was reading, I found I cared that he be successful in his efforts. I even knew he had completed the Ironman because I follow him on Facebook. His writing just gets better and better with each book. I am a fan. I look forward to his next endeavor.

He wrote another called Life's a Beach , then this one, which I just happened to see the other day , and immediately bought a copy . I haven't missed one yet !In this book, George has his biggest obstacle ever . Overcoming a tumor on his spine, the surgery and rehab to get him back to normal ... but knowing George, he doesn't stop there. He isn't satisfied with normal . He decides to be in an Ironman competition, and he only has a few months to prepare .Very inspirational story for those facing a serious surgery and uncertain recovery. Read this book. Just finished George's great book. You will experience a range of emotions with him as he first struggles to cope with a debilitating illness, and then tackle a tough recovery after surgery. His motivational tool toward finding a good recovery is a bit "out-there" however. Considering a 4 month post-operative Ironman Triathlon is way beyond sanity. The book is a very rewarding experience of discovery, humor, personal growth, and facing some serious challenge. So if you want to struggle along with his odyssey, then make sure that you read this book. His frank honesty is refreshing, and there are plenty of moments where he will make you laugh and sometimes cry. I have read two other of his books, and feel grateful that he has shared these moments with us. This book is a rewarding experience.

I've been using Maya for about a year and a half and had been wanting to learn a program like Mudbox to take my models to the next level of realism that only a digital sculpting program like Mudbox would allow. I've had this book for about 3 weeks and couldn't be happier with my end results model wise. This book cover everything from the basics of creating a human model in Maya and exporting the model into Mudbox for further detail to hard surface texturing of a robot that is made up of different kinds of metal and dents. Ara also covers going between Mudox and Photoshop for adding textures, colors, decals, etc. I found using both Mudbox and Photoshop really brought out my textures than just using Photoshop for all of it. Ara also goes over using digital 3d scanned images within Mudbox, as well as exporting your final Mudbox model out and dealing with normal, bump, displacement maps, etc. An added bonus was that his web address and email are printed in the book for any problems that the reader is facing. I ran into a problem and he was able to help me through it. Im feeling really comfortable now In mudbox because of this book and would suggest it to anyone who is first learning Mudbox or digital sculpting in general.

This book is a great book for beginners / intermediate / advanced users ofMudbox.Clearly the author is passionate about his work, and not just out to produceany old crap to make a buck.I've contacted the author regarding minor questions (I'm a complete beginner)several times, and he's responded quickly and answered all my questions.He will be available to teach Mudbox online as well, his contact info is in thebook (I think it's against Amazon.com's rules to post his info here).If you want to learn / need a refresher / want to sharpen your knowledge of Mudbox,buy the damn book, and ask about the author's online classes!

The book was a great introduction to Mudbox 2011. The author explanation of the different topics were clear and easy to understand. The DVD is a great supplement to the book. I got up and running fairly quickly. I have only one complaint the files for chapter 3 did not work it was a broken rar file. That's why I gave the book four stars. Buy it!!! You will love!!!!!!

I bought this book exactly for its title: Introducing Mudbox. The author did a great job teaching about the software itself. It speaks how to use it with tips and tricks to make your understanding as clearly as possible. I recommend it if you wanna take your first steps into digital sculpting. It's not my intention to say anything about Mudbox x Zbrush here, by that I mean the basics to intermediate sculpting process.

I have found this book to be fantastic for the beginner. It has taught me many lessons that I was unable to learn through some of the online tutorials that sometimes went way too fast for me. I'm very glad that I bought it and will have it for a valuable reference for in the future.

If you use or want to learn to use Mudbox, this will be your ultimate guide to using this program.

The book takes quite the circuitous route in the demo explanations, esp when moving back and forth to Maya, his explanation of proper file structure to integrate with Maya is sorely lacking. If you follow along, be prepared to get lost and left behind to find your own way through the file structure. I'll tell you right now, the best way to play in the mudbox is to start your project file in Maya (so you have a working file structure), then export an .obj file,then import into Mudbox and do your work that way. Also the demo videos on the DVD are super uneven in sound quality and sometimes the author is just wispering to the point of inaudibility. Chapter 3 files are a total corrupted joke, and Wiley(publisher) will just send you more corrupted un-unzippable files.Mudbox is super cool and powerful, and it must be very challenging to try to write for, but I feel that these kinds of texts, should really be worked through by the uninitiated and their input folded back into the final release, 'intro to Maya' had a lot of simillar issues where if you knew the program you would just work past any gaffes, but if you're just learning, the only thing you have is what they've told you, and that can be difficult when they lead you down a wrong path or leave you hanging at an inconvienient segue.

This is a wonderful book. I had never heard of the author but found her book recommend by Sandra Ingerman in her most recent newsletter from Oct: 2016. I have been looking for a book like this on Norse Shamanism for about 20 years. I have never run into a better researched or practice oriented book on Norse Shamanism. Since this is the tradition and area I am called to work in I felt like I had come home. I have read many other books on Norse magic etc. and this is the first time I felt like I was reading the words of an actual practicing Norse Shaman for real. It was quite powerful and very grounded and practical. I was not surprised to see that Evelyn took workshops form the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, which I have also done. Her work was clearly grounded in real research both in the library and in the inner landscapes of the spirit world. With this book I feel like I can now move forward and develop on this pathway that has been calling to me for years. I will check out her other book and see if she offers workshops. This book is well worth it if you are serious about exploring Norse Shamanism.

Well researched and rooted in findings in anthropology, archeology and history, as well as personal experience. I appreciated that the author delved deeper than just the Viking Age.I didn't necessarily agree 100% with everything, but that's OK. It's how critical thinking works in conjunction with personal gnosis.The fire practice, connection with Ancestors, and journeying under a ritual hood have been particularly effective in my personal practice. I look forward to growing my personal shamanic practice incorporating many of these seidr methods. I have already made incredible breakthroughs!

This book is incredible. Her research is spot on and she cites sources well. The book is a series of fascinating information and follow up exercises for the reader. It probably helps to have a background in shamanism, which I do, but I'm not sure it's necessary either.Some of my personal heritage is from this area of the world and it's great to finally learn about shamanism that is historically and traditionally Northern European. Every chapter led me to research even more. There was so much I had never heard of, like archeological findings. I look forward to more from the author.

Evelyn Rysdyk is a most awesome teacher & author. She is clear, concise, well-researched, impeccable & loving in her teaching, conduct and writing! I heartily recommend this and previous books she has written. Enjoy!

I have just finished reading The Norse Shaman and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Mystical aspects of the Norse tradition. This book sheds light on the human culture of the Norse, as well as the Spiritual nature inherent in this world and beyond. It is a comprehensive and well-researched book that also goes beyond the Norse tradition by informing the reader about other Shamanic traditions using historical and anthropological examples to help the reader better understand where do the Nordic traditions arise from. Finally, in The Norse Shaman, Evelyn C. Rysdyk speculates on the shift between Matriarchal into Patriarchal society with a fascinating understanding between Hunter-Gatherer versus Pastoral cultures. The Norse Shaman is not only a great guide to understanding the Shamanic practice but also is great to understand the differences between the two Norse Gods' families.

Although some of this was a review for me I found it very useful. Well researched and thought out. A bit heavy on fire exercises. But what was there was easily adapted to my use. Especially good for a beginner but useful for those already on the path.

I've read this book before and i wanted my own copy because i loved it so much! It has given me a better understanding of Seidr ( which is my personal path) and shamanism as a whole. evelyn has a great writing style and she's super easy to follow and understand.

Very impressed with this author. The research is intense and the ink drawings are outstanding. This book motivated me to buy and read her other shaman books which are equally well documented and highly motivating.
