Purchased for my younger brother after a particularly difficult and protracted divorce "battle" began resulting in "divorce casualties" (my nieces). His family counselor gave it rave reviews. (She called me to "source them", as she plans to use them in her practice.)Bought one for myself as well, as I'm one constant in their lives. (Again, kudos from the counselor!)Having worked in Family Law for many years, I feel this book is definitely worth the price to help loved ones going through this always-difficult situation where NO ONE "WINS" (ESPECIALLY when there are children involved).

I have now read this book for the third time as I suffer though a difficult separation. Every chapter has lessons that you will find valuable in different phases of the process. The advice is insightful, and I believe dead on. It's the book that you want your high conflict partner to be reading and acting on (if you can somehow get them to read it).The focus is on the kids and the impact on them. The examples are useful to show how your behavior may put you kids in the middle. It is reassuring (and with studies) to show that impact of divorce does not have to ruin your kids for life. That's not to mean that it's a feel good book, rather it is saying that if you choose to act one way, then married or not your kids are going to suffer. But, if you can behave in a constructive and businesslike way the impacts are likely to be much less in the longer term.The real nuggets focus on how you feel and has great descriptions of the feelings you are likely to be going through, how that may affect your actions. For those that like these explanations it can give you some cause and effect. Of particular interest to me right now is a section on the different reactions and mindset of the person who is leaving the mariage (the 'leaver') and the left. Because the leaver has a headstart on the left their dynamics are almost predictable between them. There is a very insightful discussion on the cycle of anger, sadness and grief that permeates these situations.The message of the book is (especially for high conflict), to take the emotion out of the husband-wife relationship, and focus on creating a very business like relationship, (often communicated over short emails) tha focuses on the remaining thing you share in common: your children. While that sounds cold, there is a logic behind it that is abundantly explained in examples and it's all for the benefit of the kids.

My mom recommended this book to me and my ex wife. It helped both of us. We stopped fighting and are actually friends now. I started reading it and was like wow I'm guilty of some of the negative behaviors and I didn't realize it. This is not a preachy book or a caudling book but more of a solution book.

I love my collection of David Ming children books, especially this one. The illustrations are awesome in this book. It's definitely a children book but the stylish illustrations and the choice of animals are more mature, which I appreciate. I also love that it uses four languages to teach about animals and opposites. Great book by a great author!

The cute drawings and colorful patterns in the Fearless Shark make my grandson ask for this book time and time again. The Chinese Pinyin is great to teach him how to sound out the Chinese. It makes me so happy when he asks grandma to read to him in our native language.

About the Author

Edgar H. Schein is the Sloan Fellows Professor of Management Emeritus and Senior Lecturer at MIT's Sloan School of Management. He started his education at the University of Chicago, received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, and earned his Ph.D. in social psychology at Harvard University in 1952. I would recommend this book to all those who are in the process of getting a Master's or Doctorate in Organizational psychology. I would also recommend this book to all who are looking to or currently are consultants. This book in a highly technical but readable manner explains how to help as a consultant. It gives excellent exercises to do after the chapter to sharpen your knowledge of the chapter. This an all around excellent book.

Ed Schein's book gives a very nice and easy to understand intro to Process consultation. It should be read by more consultants out there. I found his formulations simple and easy to understand and easily recognizable. I have sometimes wondered why I do the things I do in a certain matter - now I understand it better thanks to this book. It was a confirmation for me that what I do and how I do it is "OK" and I can carry on doing it. The book also gives insights into ways of experimenting with your style. Towards the middle section I found the book to be somewhat (over) detailed but for many readers this might be the right thing.

this is a great book one looking at and understanding interpersonal and intra-psychological phenomena in teams and what to do about them to help the group be more effective.

Mesmerizing!!! A simply awesome read. Finished it in less than a day ... hard to stop reading.So what is it? It's science meets spirituality .... I have loved Geology for many many years and learned as much as I could from reading. I had the awesome experience living in the southernmost Mojave Desert right up upon the San Bernardino Mountain's foothills Outside of Apple Valley, Ca. This was indeed a spiritual experience for me ... and this book resonated with me ... finding mystery and wonder in nature and the world around us is probably the most wonderful experience. I drove the mountain "off road" roads and the desert "off-road" roads and marveled at nature. every night the Milky Way was overhead and the sky so full of stars that it was difficult to pick out the constellations ... So This book brought me to the Amazon of today and to a great geological mystery. There is a great blend of exploring, science, and a plea for respect and preservation of the world's few remaining wild places.This was a simply wonderful reading experience ... some great "take-aways" and much on which to reflect.I heartily recomment this little book to all!!!!

I discovered this book from a recent TED Talk.Special places exist in the world. This is one of them. It is hoped that he can help keep this river and those who use it pure.A celebration of this unique area is shared in his book. Some neighbors honor and work with those who live here, while others tear down the forests and burn the remains to farm and 'develop' the area.I admire the author Andres Ruzo who has connected with this place. He is trying to preserve the Boiling River and the people who celebrate and honor it. His concern extends to his PhD Thesis on this geologic wonder. He does not want his research used to exploit the people or the resource.

This "TED book" is based on, and extends, a recent TED talk by the author. Ruzo, a grad student in geology, had heard a family story about a river of boiling water, and when he inquired again about it (because it was of interest from a geological point of view), an aunt said she knew all about it, and offered to show it to him. That was important because she was an old friend of the shaman who controlled who got to see the river. This book tells about Ruzo's adventures in finding this boiling river, deep in the Peruvian Amazon forest, and also shows some of the problems of protecting and preserving that forest. Basically, it is a story of how he got a lucky break to learn about this marvel of nature (the river is far larger than any other hot spring anywhere), and took advantage of it. It is very well written, and I enjoyed reading it. My only complaint is that the photos don't come over especially well; the Kindle paper-white screen really is marginal for continuous tone images, and the photos should always be formatted for "landscape" orientation to best utilize the screen area.

So exciting to learn that such wild adventure is still possible in our well-known world! Also it is very well written and the balance between science, traditional beliefs and environmental protection is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Such a great read and wonderful story! It's such a cool tale that feels more like something from a hundred or two hundred years ago than the present day, which adds to the magic of the story. The magic of the story is grounded in solid science - a great combination of the modern meeting the mystical.

This is the second book I have read that I will never forget. The Amazon tribe is amazing. I loved how they honor the environment. It is quite special that the search for this river was motivated by a child's story. The entire book is a learning experience. I would love to visit the boiling river and the people that live there.The last few pages of the book is a list of organizations and others that are working to preserve the river and the jungle. I hope they are successful. If interested go to boilingriver.org. It's worth the time.

This is not too much more than a geology journal article but it is very informative and well-written. The author is enthusiastic and compassionate about his subject, the people and jungle it impacts and the ethics of bringing the world's attention to it in the midst of catastrophic development.

Very interesting read. Andres Ruzo explains things in an easy to understand manner. To think that many people knew of the boiling river minus geologist. Ruzo and others never did discover source of the boiling river (deep fissures?)
