Dunk & Egg are back at it with the 3rd graphic novel by the same team that brought you the excellent first two editions.Same great quality. Same amazingly expressive artwork.Absolutely worthy of the high quality that was set by The Hedge Knight and The Sworn Sword.

This is the third prequel novella that has been adapted as a graphic novel. The first two were excellent - this is truly superb. The plot, pacing, characterization and dialogue are all first rate. The art is exceptional. You don't have to know the history of Westeros to appreciate this. Mr. Martin does an outstanding job showing the intrigue and politics that follow the lines and bastards of kings.

I was happy to spend some time revisiting The Mystery Knight in graphic novel form. It's been seemingly released to little fan-fair. Turning the pages here takes me back to the days of my youth and being an avid comic book reader. Like all GRRM fans I'd much rather read something new; say The Winds of Winter, or even the next Dunk & Egg tale. But until then, taking a trot down the jousting lane with Dunk and Egg at Whitewalls will have to do.

CAVEAT: This is a Kindle Edition Review, which considers the story and the medium with separate standards.Story: This is a graphic adaptation of the GRRM short story "The Mystery Knight," which builds more backstory into "A Song of Ice and Fire." If you're new to the series, you should start with "The Hedge Knight."In this story, Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg are making their way north across the Riverlands when they decide to join the festivities of wealthy Lord Butterwell's wedding. There will be a feast and a jousting tourney, with Lord Butterwell's dragon egg as the prize. Duncan tries out some privileges of knighthood for himself and finds them a mixed bag, just as his old master Ser Arlan warned him. Egg, with his eye for social subtleties, senses the political elephant in the castle before Duncan. The knights, the lordly Houses and the exercise of power and symbolism are all themes we get another perspective on, building on the work of "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and other ASOIAF titles. My only quibble with the story, as told, is two lines lost in translation from the short story. At the campfire by the lake, after Ser Kyle tells the salacious story of where Butterwell's dragon egg came from, Dunc makes the quip that "If half those old stories were true, we'd all be bastard sons of old King Aegon." Ser Maynard Plumm ripostes "Who says we aren't?!"Medium: Like Adam Charlton notes in his review, many panels could stand some more zoom. You can't magnify the text or the action and read these beautiful panels like you can in the Kindle GN edition of "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," or "Meathouse Man," other GRRM graphic adaptions I own. 3 screenshots are attached I hope that if the novel is reformatted, kindle owners will be alerted.

I love the Dunk & Egg tales and this third installment does not disappoint. The illustrations are great and it continues the adventures of one of our favorite duos.

Beautiful artwork and almost no variance from the original text. My only criticism would be that it shied away from the Fiddler's homosexuality in terms of dialogue which is slightly disquieting. Otherwise it's lovely.

And the story continues .... I thoroughly enjoyed this simple and far too short of a tale. I cant wait for the fifth edition....

My favorite tale in the Dunk and Egg sega and this just allows an extra look of what the world of ice and fire looks like. Isnt word for word transposed but tells the whole story and is beautiful

Review

"Much of Pro Cycling on $10 a Day spins as pure pleasure―an inside account of what it’s really like to race for a living and occasionally be among the sport’s elite…The best parts read like an unpretentious insider’s diary, full of the kind of wisecracks, gossip and advice traded on memorable long rides." ― Wall Street Journal"At a time when pro cycling has struggled with its image, Phil Gaimon has emerged as a refreshing voice from the peloton ― intelligent, humorous, articulate, and above all, transparent. As a college-educated latecomer to the sport, as an outsider who struggled to be given a chance, and as someone with the perspective to laugh at the absurdity of being paid to ride a bicycle for a living, Gaimon’s insights into the pro cycling world resonate with a wide audience. His self-effacing humor, commitment to clean sport, and extraordinary talent have made him a bit of an everyman hero within pro cycling ― a rider you want to hear from, and know more about, win or lose." ― Velo magazine"In this age of tell-all memoirs from cyclists popped for doping, Pro Cycling on $10 a Day by Phil Gaimon is a refreshing change…It’s a witty, revealing look at cycling that will make you want to quit your job and start training for the Tour." ― Bicycling magazine"Having watched Phil race over the past few years we know he is a great, versatile rider with a huge amount of talent. Beyond that, he is also funny, smart and unique addition to the team. We think he’ll be a great fit both on the road and off and we look forward to helping him take the next step in his career." ― Jonathan Vaughters, CEO, Team Garmin-Sharp"An outspoken proponent of clean competition, Gaimon sports a tattoo of a bar of soap with the world ‘clean’ on his right bicep, and he was attracted to Garmin-Sharp for its ethical code." ― CyclingNews.com"For anyone who’s ever dreamed about having the glamorous life of a pro cyclist, Phil Gaimon’s Pro Cycling on $10 a Day serves up some realistic―and hilarious―truths. From the uncertain process of finding a team, to dealing with performance setbacks and achievements, to the crazy stuff riders see while traveling, Gaimon provides an engaging portrait of life on the road as a domestic pro. The best part: Even through the toughest moments of his cycling career, Gaimon’s dedication to and love for his sport shines through―which is something any rider can relate to, pro or not." ― Bicycling.com"Pro Cycling on $10 a Day is the story we all want to hear: a regular guy who rides from overweight amateur to European pro in a short time, finding his way and making the best decisions from the resources he had. Phil’s story inspires hope in up-and-comers about what hard work can produce. If you listen, pay attention and surround yourself with the best people you can, then no dream is out of touch." ―Jeremy Powers, professional cyclist for Jelly Belly Cycling Team and Team Rapha-Focus and two-time U.S. Cyclocross National Champion"We have discovered a light-hearted, hard-working rider with strong convictions." ―Podium Café"Pro Cycling on $10 a Day gives you an incredibly realistic and entertaining feel for what goes on in the minor leagues of pro cycling. It’s also the best―by far―of the current crop of cycling autobiographies." ― FatCyclist.com"I believed in Phil and he worked hard to make the best of his opportunity in racing. He lived out of his car, trained hard, drove hours to get to races, and always showed up ready to fight at each race. He didn’t have it easy… I never knew what was going to come out of Phil’s mouth but I always knew he would race himself into the ground to try and win for himself or the team." ― Frankie Andreu, Team Director, 5-hour ENERGY presented by Kenda, 9-time Tour de France finisher, and 2-time Olympic cyclist"The truth is you should buy and read Pro Cycling on $10 a Day because it’s a fucking awesome book about the love of bike racing…A hilarious and gripping account of the gypsy life of a domestic pro." ― NYVelocity"Phil Gaimon’s book is so entertaining and funny and honest and insightful that I could not stop to make notes, mark pages or even begin to build a more thoughtful review. I was too hooked to break the spell for even a moment…Take a raucous and wild ride with Gaimon as he jumps off that fat boy couch and fights his way ― with great humor ― to his dream." ― A Twisted Spoke"Pro Cycling on $10 a Day is a highly compulsive, humorous and insightful look at the life of an ambitious workaday professional cyclist as he strives for a chance at the big-time." ― The Washing Machine Post"Professional cyclist Phil Gaimon tells the true story of his unlikely transformation from couch potato teen to professional bike racer." ― Bicycle Retailer & Industry News"This is an true underdog story about how one man transformed his very average life into one that is worthy of my time to read." ― Bicycle World TV"The first thing you’ll notice about Phil’s house is a sit-up bench in his living room instead of a TV. The next thing is all the framed Calvin and Hobbes cartoons on the walls. In the strip, Calvin’s bike was always trying to kill him and this was true for Phil when he needed race results so bad, he was willing to risk it all. Phil’s book tells the story of the guy who mastered his bike, worked hard, and finally found a contract that pays a little more than $10 a day." ― Gwen Jorgensen, professional triathlete, Olympic athlete, and two-time U.S. National Champion"Expect to laugh at his mistakes, learn important techniques―like how to make sweet tea in a hotel room or how to properly tackle a corner in a crit race―and realize what it takes to compete at the top." ― Triathlete magazine"Phil Gaimon embodies what every aspiring cyclist wants to be: skinny, fast, and clean. He attacked his dream of going pro so hard he ended up in a nightmare with me. Read his book and you’ll realize that Phil speaks the truth: bike racing is hard, but becoming a pro is even harder." ― Brad Huff, professional cyclist for Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies"Gaimon’s humor, even while facing huge challenges, makes the book a great read." ― TailWinds

Phil Gaimon can ride much better than me, write much better than me, and eat cookies much better than me. I really want to hate his books, but the problem is they're entertaining as all hell and once I start one I just can't put it down.Even a non cyclist would possibly enjoy this. Actually no. Non cyclists only enjoy getting fat and occasionally running us over.

Phil is obviously a very talented writer, couching in hilarious humor, excellent insights he gathered in the professional ranks! Instead of going awash in deep technicality or grandios physiology, Phil relates easily in layman's language . No bitterness, here, even if there is, it's couched in humor. I wish it were twice it's length because you won't want to put it down; and just like a great race, it will all be over too soon!!

Should or shouldn't I buy yet another bike book, and at a relatively high price at that...? Well, I finally did, and no regrets whatsoever. Written with lots of wit and 'dry' humor, but also with a lot of useful tips, this book is delightful to read, and has become one of my favorites on my "Kindle shelf" :-)

Phil Gaimon's responses to reader questions are hilarious, and the book served to remind me how much I enjoyed Pro Cycling on $10 a day. Ask a Pro was a very quick read, but worth buying because I didn't read many of the articles when they were in print. The individual responses were so short, it was easy to read a couple while in line, waiting for kids, etc. Reading Phil's perspective makes me realize how lucky I am (most of the time) to be an amateur who rides and races solely for fun. Looking forward to his next book in October.

Just about any quirky, little thing you wanted to know about pro cycling is in this book. A great read, no. A fun read on the toilet or for your commute to work? Yes!!!! I'd call this book a supplement but Phil has a way of making $$ and I read his $10 a day book which I enjoyed. I think he's making more than $10 a day now. Way to go!!!

This is very entertaining! I found myself LOL'ing quite a bit, although there were times he either didn't give a real answer or I couldn't tell if he was kidding or not. Will purchase some of his other books now too.

Very similar to his other book. I enjoyed it and read it in under a week so it kept me coming back. I like his sarcasm which reminds us to not take cycling too serious unless you are a pro.

Nothing new. But still fun to read. Phil may not have won a Tour, but he would be my first choice of a rider to buy a beer

The book is really cute. I will be using it for my preschool class lesson on France.I would have happily accepted the book as "good" - however, someone thought it was a good idea to cover up an already present tear in the cover with a STICKER closing the book shut. When I pulled off the sticker it left a gross residue...and it looks like I caused the damage. Looking closely, though, it is obvious that the cover was already damaged.

My granddaughter loved, specially after I gave her a jigsaw puzzle depicting the Eiffel tower,

The book was exactly as described. I gave it as a gift and the person who received it really enjoyed the book. I would order from this company again.

Seemed to have quite a bit of information for a grade schooler. 3rd grader was impressed.

I gifted this to my niece and I think she loves it. She is 8

Very informative book about the Eiffel tower and its beginnings

This book has wonderful illustrations. This was one of my favorites in our unit on France I did with my 4 and 6 year old. Would be great for older ages too!

Great for young readers interested in learning about other contries and the lure of the Eiffel Tower :)

Well, its taken me a very long time to read this book and its not a fault of the book. This is part biography of Bach (though not as much as many may like), part biography of various pieces of his church music and the imagination that birthed it, and in large part evocative description of Bach's sacred music itself. There is much to commend here. Gardiner is one of the foremost experts on Bach today, and not because he has read nearly everything there is to read about Bach, although he has probably done so judging from the footnotes and endnotes (the former are all worth reading as they are full of gems, the latter are typically only citation details). Gardiner is himself a musician and conductor and has undertaken one of the most interesting and unique feats of musical exploration ever conducted (pardon the pun, and see below).Gardiner is a leader in the recent trend (since the '70s) in musical exploration which attempts to play the music of a particular composer or era (for Bach, the Baroque) in the way its original hearers would have experienced it. As such, performances will be played on period instruments (ie. gut strings rather than steel, instruments crafted using original techniques rather than modern, etc.) and played in the way they likely would have been originally played (ie. in churches rather than concert halls, unamplified, and often at a much quicker pace than modern sensibilities usually gravitate toward). Gardiner's "insider" perspective on Bach's music as interpreted through Bach's life and religious convictions as well as through having stood in Bach's place as conductor throughout a full church calendar cycle is really what makes this book special.Gardiner is at his best as an author when he is at his best as a conductor. The book describes at great length not only the musicology and the performance but also the psychology and theology of some of Bach's most well known works. These descriptions often sore along verbally, mirroring the score itself as it is playing back in the mind of the author. I have to admit that prior to reading this book, Bach was already my favourite composer. However, while reading this book, I purchased (or was given by a friend who himself masterfully plays Baroque music on period instruments) several CDs of Bach's music, as many as possible of which were conducted by Gardiner, performed by his famous Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists and recorded in churches or cathedrals. I have to advocate for this way of reading this book. Listening to the very work, performed (or as Bach might have preferred to think of it, offered) as close as possible to the way it would have originally been sung and played, while reading Gardiner's often emotional and spiritual descriptions of the works is among the closest experiences I've ever come to reading in four dimensions. Many will classify this as a biographical/historical work, but there are profound observations of psychology, theology, philosophy, liturgics and worship here as well. I did not always agree with Gardiner's rendering of Bach's Lutheran psychology or of Bach's own spiritual struggles. I thought perhaps where Gardiner sometimes detected doubt in Bach's scoring of a particular portion of the gospels or other Scripture, one could just as easily interpret a tried but steady faith or a determination to believe the promises of God despite the upheavals of this earthly life (Bach lost an uncle and both parents by the time he was 10, and he lost his first wife and several of his children - 10 if I recall). Or perhaps as is more likely, it is a combination of all of the above. But even where I wondered if Gardiner was misinterpreting the inspiration behind some of Bach's scores or some of his margin notes in his favourite Bible commentaries, I know that I am far richer for having had someone like Gardiner lead me into the inner world of Bach's mind and his music.Gardiner is somewhat uniquely qualified to write this book. Not only has Bach been in the forefront of his consciousness since he was a child and his family had a famous original portrait of Bach hanging in their stairwell, "overseeing" the home, but Gardiner set out on a unique and mind-blowing "Bach cantata pilgrimage" in 2000 with his orchestra and choir, playing all (yes, ALL) of Bach's sacred cantatas in a 52 week period in churches around Europe and the US. This meant that they performed nearly everyday for a year, sometimes more than once a day, something that Bach himself would have done in his post as Thomascantor in Leipzig. When one does this, one really get's inside the head and heart of the great master even as he himself was inhabiting the seasons of the church year, recounting and witnessing as they do to the history of redemption through the life and work of Christ. If someone wants a basic and general introduction to Bach, I highly recommend not this. If you want an in depth biography of the life of Bach this is also not your book. However, if you want to begin to understand Bach's sense of sacred mission, his motivations, and above all the tapestry of his sacred music itself in all its variation, complexity, energy and beauty, this deep-dive is your guide.

This is, and I am sure it will continue to be, one of the most interesting, well researched and valuable of books written on J.S. Bach and his times to date. I began it the day it arrived and have barely put it down. That is saying a lot as I have been buying and listening to and reading about Bach for the past 50+ years.Just a quarter of the way into its more than 600 pages, I can report that this book should prove to be invaluable to anyone interested in Bach, the Baroque, and the musicians of that era and before. It is Gardiner's clear and compelling writing, the depth of his research, and his emphasis on Bach's life that is so very compelling. Who was Bach? Why was he that way? And how did his life shape his music? Answering these questions are the objectives of the book. He does it better than anyone I have read. There is much new information discovered only in the last decade or more.I will revise this review when I've finished reading, but I wanted to send a dispatch that in the first four chapters, this is proving to be a wonderful and instructive read. And a last note: the footnotes are terrific.

Because of my long-held fascination with, and love for, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, it only seemed natural that I would eventually begin seeking out biographies of the great composer. Many years ago, I read Christoph Wolff’s masterful “Bach: The Learned Musician.” Now I have just completed another fascinating study of Bach’s life: “Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven” by John Eliot Gardiner.Gardiner is, of course, the famed British conductor who specializes in “historically informed performances” of early music. As his marvelous book attests, he is both an excellent Bach scholar and a formidably talented writer. Gardiner faces the same limitations of other writers seeking to tell Johann Sebastian Bach’s story in any kind of lucid and detailed manner: there is precious little in the way of empirical historical data about Bach to guide biographers. Bach wrote almost nothing about himself, his surviving children left very little in writing about him, and the letters he wrote (that still exist) only reveal something of his curmudgeonly personality, but not much else. What Gardiner attempts to do in “Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven” is to explore Bach’s life primarily through his music – more specifically, his cantatas, passions, and other vocal works. In this, I think Gardiner succeeds very well. He includes as much biographical information as he can find, and then turns to an analysis of many of Bach’s most important works to give readers a glimpse of not only Bach’s innate musical genius, but of his humanity as well.I have two concerns about “Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven.” It is quite challenging to read, assuming (as it does) that readers have more than a passing knowledge of European history and of music (both of which I have). Gardiner also tends to interject anecdotes about himself and his own experiences on occasion, a habit that I find detracted slightly from my overall enjoyment of the book. Now that I am finished reading “Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven,” I feel that I have come to know the enigmatic Johann Sebastian Bach better through John Eliot Gardiner’s writing. Bach seems more “human” somehow – not only the colossal musical genius who has been a major influence on all genres of music for nearly three centuries now, but also an ordinary and flawed man who suffered much grief during his lifetime, and who persevered through a deep and abiding Christian faith that was the driving force behind everything he composed. Despite my minor criticisms of it, I think this is an excellent biography that I can easily recommend. (4½ Stars ^ 5)

This is a very good book indeed. It is powerful, eye-opening, and disturbing. Kline gives a gripping narative for the most part. I say for the most part because sometimes the narative seems repetitive. The book also appears to be well documented.Naomi Kline paints a picture of how the corporate world, neoliberal economists, and polticians worked to take advantage of communities and countries in shock because of some calamity—political, economic, and natural. They move in and inact free-trade, drastric cuts in govenrment, reduced taxes (for the rich), dump price controls, and deregulation. These changes benefit no one except the rich, the poltical leaders, and foreign corporations, who are aften one and the same. The poor in these places go from worse to worser. The book begins with shock treatment experiments funded by the CIA with possible applications to interagation. The idea was to wipe a person brain clean. They also developed sensory deprivation, and thus acting together to destroy the self to be built anew. The next preliminary topic is the Chicago School Economics led by Milton Freedman at the University of Chicago which developed neoliberalism, which to me is a misnomer, seeing how it is a very conservative doctrine. The book, then moves on to the historical picture to see how these ideas were practice in the real world outside of the academy. South America is presented with the shock of political upheaval, starting with Chile. Also in South America, it discusses the debt crisises that occurred following the ouster of strong arm governments. It covers Poland, Russia, and South Africa with their peaceful transfer of power with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. It also goes into United States' shocks. One is the Iraq war after 9/11 and the privatization of war. Privatization is also shown to be at work in the hurricane Katrina disaster to the detriment of the New Orleans poor. Coverage is given to the Asian Tiger's financial currency debacle and the recovery from the Tsunami that hit many coastal areas in the Indian ocean basin in 2004.In the last section, Kline does hold out some hopefulness, as she describes people's efforts in recent years to counter the neoliberals and corporatists to take over of many country's economies.I recommend this book, especially for those who have a concern for the poor. It should be of interest to others interested in how modern economic theory affects the world.with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. I read The Shock Doctrine while I was in Italy this past summer. I was, to put it mildly, shocked, but not in the way Naomi Klein means it. Shock used as a force of manipulation and the taking over of our resources and even our perceptions, by those in power and in wealth, is a formidable concept--a formidable reality. As a person considering myself progressive, I have tried in recent years to get to better understand what goes on beneath the apparent destructive trends in our social and political policies. I have realized that I and many of us, have been naive, preaching and repeating, demonstrating but with little or not enough, understanding of the dynamics that are pulling on all of us, and often pulling us down.As a psychotherapist I have been concentrating on the inner dynamics keeping us addicted, just about, to blame and denial. This book, I have to say, blew me out of the water. It is so smart, so thorough and so clear--even if the concepts and facts are making me toss and turn and get upset and have to reread. Meanwhile I have been reading This Changes Everything and No is Not Enough. They are extremely worthy and important, very important in their own right, but I keep coming back to just how urgent the concepts in The Shock Doctrine are. I will do my part and re-read, so as to re-absorbe. This is the stuff we need to be aware of and current on, and have on our lips, in our minds, our hearts, and in the urgent discussions we can only have as we get more aware of what the ? is really going on in a world that often provokes us to be scattered, confused, polarized and even despairing. Oh yes, here too an important addendum is that this book does not leave the reader in a dark space without hope. But please read it to see where Naomi Klein winds up, as she helps us to see where clarity could yield something deeply and dramatically positive.

Naomi Klein is the same age as me. She was born in capitalist Canada, I in socialist Poland. In 1989 communism collapsed like a house of cards. It created a breach that flooded the new wave. At that time, working in the corporate seemed fondest dream; stable, interesting work, modernity, prestige, touching a better world. Today, after 28 years, the situation has changed. Corporate employees called in Poland as lemmings. The Shock Doctrine is shocking. I think this was the aim of the author, starting from a high "C" or by describing interrogation techniques, including torture, in the first part. Disaster makes the opportunity for profit. In these few words can be summarized as six hundred pages book that touches the problems of social injustice and corporate greed over the years 1973-2007, including Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, China, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, USA.Naomi's views are clearly defined: anti-globalization, anti-war, anti-capitalism, environmentalism. (The influence of family ?; see Wikipedia). It is hard to expect that the contents of the book differed from the author's worldview. For neoliberalism Naomi replies shocking content. I learned a lot from this book. Worth reading The Shock Doctrine, even if the content contained in the book is filtered through the views of Naomi Klein. We were born in the same year, in different countries, but divide us experience and look at the reality. The world is not one-dimensional, and corporate greed is embedded in our biological nature. Alternative? Judging by the last, summarizing chapter probably Naomi itself does not have an explicit opinion on how to alleviate the symptoms of the free market. Communism died, socialism is expensive and creates parasites (see Hugo Chavez), capitalism without a bridle causing barbarism, democracy promotes crooks and populists. What is the solution Naomi?
