This is a lengthy and well written account of Lt. Ramsey's incredible fight against the Japanese invasion forces in the Philippine Islands during WWII. It begins with his raucous childhood and explains how he as a later horse soldier got transferred to the Manila area. He decided not to surrender and found himself eventually at the head of a huge and growing guerrilla army. His tenacity and courage and sense of patriotism carried him through. Illnesses and the lethal nearness of the Japanese army were always at his door. I don't see how he managed to bear such huge responsibilities and physical demands as he did. Lt. Ramsey was an incredible hero, and before this book, I had never heard of him. His story would have made an incredible motion picture. He died not too long ago. I wish I could have even been in the same room with him for any length of time...what an honor to be in his presence. I was an honor to read his words in this remarkable book. If our young people today could pull themselves away from the shallow entertainment that fills their days now, and just read and comprehend what strength and bravery Lt. Ramsey used in his sacrifice for America's freedom, it just might make them truly appreciate what they have today. Ramsey and others like him should have this country's undying respect and gratitude for eternity. Enjoy this book. It is detailed and remarkable in every way.
"Lieutenant Ramsey's War" gives a closeup, first-person view of the merciless battle for the Philippines in World War II against the ruthless Imperial Japanese Army. The biographical account exposes the reader to the realities of the guerrilla war waged by the Filipinos and a handful of American soldiers and miners who refused to surrender when the Japanese capped their cheap, quick victory run at the beginning of the war in the Pacific. Ramsey details the sufferings of the Filipinos who selflessly supported him and the surviving Americans as well as his own hardships. Before the guerrilla phase of the struggle, Ramsey retells some of the final actions by American cavalry including its last wartime charge--a successful counterattack against a Japanese attempt to overrun a village on Bataan. Gen. Douglas MacArthur has been both vilified and lionized, but Ramsey's vision of the general as a savior is fully understandable: Ramsey gives a personal view of how MacArthur fulfilled his promise and ended the sufferings of the Americans and Filipinos who resisted the Japanese when the U.S. military returned to the Philippines. His personal dealings with MacArthur puts the latter in a whole new light and not from that of a detached historian.
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Unlike most war stories, which focus on the external action, Lieutenant Ramsey documents his internal struggle to maintain his sanity and equilibrium in a world gone insane around him. His description of the environment he finds himself in is so well done, the reader can almost smell the rotting jungle, enjoy the magnificent sunsets, and feel nausea at the destruction and death in the aftermath of battles. As the leader of the last cavalry charge in US Army history, Ramsey witnessed the end of a way of life that had dominated military thinking for centuries. His journey from being a polo-playing cavalry officer to the leader of a 40,000 strong guerrilla army, rivals any fiction story ever written.
Today's generation has no idea of the sacrifices and hardships endured by the men and women who fought during WW II. This book will enlighten those ignorant of these men and women. The book is well written by a professional author and screenwriter (Stephen J. Rivele)who worked with Edwin Ramsey in putting his incredible story on paper. Lt. Ramsey, a U.S. Army Cavalry man, commanded some 40,000 anti-Japanese guerrillas in The Philippines from 1942 to 1945 causing the Japanese to put a $200,000 bounty on his head (equal to $2.6 million in today's dollars). They never collected and Ramsey made their lives miserable. He was an unselfish, altruistic man who refused to surrender despite recurring bouts of tropical diseases, sweltering jungle life, typhoons, Filipino bandits, pro-Japanese HUKs, lack of provisions, and very little support from regular U.S. forces. In addition to telling Ramsey's story, he spends a lot of time talking about the courageous Filipinos who fought against the Japanese and who supported and often hid him at the risk of their own lives. The book was originally published in 1990, but it remains a fresh and exciting read. I am amazed there has never been a film made about this man and his life as a guerrilla commander.
Truth is better than fiction. I have studied the consequences of America's complacency and poor preparation for war prior to Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, the Phillipines and elsewhere in the Pacific. Edwin Ramsey opted not to surrender and to resist the Japanese, but he was a cavalryman, not trained in guerrilla warfare. This book will document his evolution as an unconventional warrior, some of the difficult decisions and losses he faced, as well as his efforts to organize and lead effective resistance against a determined, well-equipped and ruthless enemy. Despite poor logistic support and the ravages of tropical disease, Ramsey was there from start to finish. He used his resources well and relied heavily on the courageous Phillipine people for intelligence, support, medical assistance and combat aggression against the Japanese. Victory was costly. I'd say this book is well worth reading.
