Many of the exercises won't work on a Kindle - you need the paper version. In addition, the Kindle does not have page numbers for this book, yet the book refers to page numbers to find the answers for the exercises. I had to order the paperback.

I have been learning to play duplicate bridge for three years and own 20 bridge books (wow I didn’t realize I have accumulated that many until now!) and this one is one of the most helpful. I’ve got to the point where I know many things by theory but often make mistakes at the table. I want to learn how to think, reason, and make the right choices at the table. This book points the way. What helped me most are how to continue re-evaluating my hands while bidding is going on, the Opening Lead, the Art of Signaling and Competitive Bidding.

The Kindle edition suffers from careless typesetting, almost as though it were computer generated with nobody checking the final product. Some of the more common errors include mixing up the symbols for suits (e.g., a club instead of a spade), weird spacing ("1 0 876" instead of "10 8 7 6"), and character substitutions (such as "I" or "l" instead of "1"). Having to cope with these frequent errors makes reading the examples and exercises a real chore. As for content and writing style, I agree with the other reviewers that this book is a gem. If it weren't for the sloppy editing, I'd have awarded five stars.

The topics are ones for intermediate and advanced players. Good explanations and examples are given. When it was translated for kindle spades are sometimes listed as clubs. Also the 4 hands come out on different pages making it hard for the reader to concentrate. The worst thing is not being able to see the complete bidding.

A lovely book for the "serious beginner." Dorothy Truscott -- for years head honcho of the New York Times bridge column -- does indeed stress thinking rather than reacting at the bridge table. For example, would you support a bad bid by upping it? Yet many people do. Not every bid belongs to you and partner, and not every hand is bound for game. Think! This book helps you do just that, with humor and common sense.

This is a great book for a novice or an intermediate player like me. The information is laid out very concisely with helpful quizzes at the end of each chapter.

A succinct guide to bidding and play. I hadn't played for nearly 40 years and Truscott's book brought me up to date on the bidding conventions in common use today. Playing techniques for both offense and defense are covered. This guide should improve your play if you are needing a brush up but may impose too steep of a learning curve for a beginner.

The author is a well known bridge player of some stature. The book is well written with some humor, although some of the concepts are outdated. What I found disturbing was the lack of editing. It needs to be edited by someone familiar with the game in order to correct some of the typos. When I complained to Amazon, I received a form letter. "Thanks for writing with your comments regarding the typographical errors .It is certainly not our intention for our customers to have anything but a pleasant experience using Kindle and Kindle applications. I apologize for any inconvenience caused in this regard. " Not very satisfying.Still the book is worth reading.

Dorothy Hayden Truscott is the best bridge teacher in the world! Makes perfect sense & improved my game tremendously!

Amazing book with alot of good set piece moments that reunites characters and allows them to finally have closure that has to this point been absent. There are several moments that are very tear jerking and makes you feel for the characters in the moment. Sadly most of the positive events and best parts of the book are exclusive to the Alliance side and one short side story, the Horde perspective parts well.....they almost all written in a way that makes it very clear that 'Sylvanus is not good and they REALLY want you to know that' so if you were hoping for some insight or possible intrigue that makes the actions of the Banshee Queen something you could understand or empathize with well you wont find it here. Conclusion good read not my favorite thats a toss up between Warcrimes and Illidan but theres a VERY CLEAR 'Anduin wants everyone happy' which I don't mind i'm a sucker for a altruist and 'Sylvanus IS BAD and you should think shes BAD'.

This book is difficult for me to review, but I shall try to give it an honest shot. As a member of the Horde, my feelings on the book may be biased, but I shall try to manage this as best I can. ;-)Overall, it displays excellent writing, which we have come to expect from Christie Golden. The characters interact very fluidly and naturally, and their dialogue is simply superb. I rather enjoyed Anduin's character for the most part, along with many other Alliance characters. Some of the Horde characters were strong, too, but others, important ones, were done a disservice, in my view.I imagine it must be difficult to write such a book that entwines itself with a game in which so many people invest their time and efforts. Finding a perfect balance in every book is likely impossible, and the books are occasionally going to lean towards one faction or another (especially since the next expansion is based upon the Alliance and Horde resuming their long-running battle after having worked together so hard against the legion). This book is very much swayed towards the Alliance. I say this not as a Horde player, but as a reader. It wouldn't be an issue if it felt like the Horde characters were allowed the same level of character depth and development that the Alliance had been, but, alas, this is not the case. I wasn't expecting this when I bought it, as I did hope for a bit more balance and fair treatment of the two factions. In some moments, I felt like the righteousness of the Alliance was a bit overdone, but I must confess that this statement could stem from personal feelings of a Horde player! As a reader, it's a very good book, and I like it for all the qualities I like most books. As a member of the Horde, I must confess disappointment. I'm saddened to see the direction they've decided to go with this story. Still, the book rates a solid 4 stars, as it is another great book from the pen (do they still use pens?) of Christie Golden.

I enjoyed this book, but would like to warn people that it has a very specific purpose: to educate you about the characters and political environment leading into World of Warcraft's Battle for Azeroth expansion (released on Aug. 13th, 2018),The story alone is pretty slow and isn't really all that good. Much of the narrative is spent describing the people involved, including their past events in the WoW lore. The best way I can put this is that if you weren't playing WoW, the story would be somewhat boring and not very interesting. That being said, I enjoyed the book because I'm fairly new to WoW and nearly all of the information presented was new to me. I learned quite a bit of the lore and am now much better prepared to understand and enjoy the expansion. If that's your goal, then this will be a great book. Otherwise I don't recommend it.

Not a bad read for this genre. The writing was good and it kept me interested until the end. I would even encourage fans of the Horde to read it. It confirmed for me that the new WoW expansion is going to be revolve around a ruthless Horde warchief who tries to use an exotic substance to destroy his/her enemies. Sound like a reboot of a prior expansion?

Something I've always loved about World of Warcraft is how there is no true right or wrong side of the Alliance/Horde conflict. They each have their own justifiable reasoning for their actions. The same still holds true for this book. We can see how decisions were reached, even if we may not agree with them. It's a fine balance, making both sides relatable, and Christie Golden has done a excellent job at that. This book also read almost like a mystery: we knew something terrible was going to happen but we're kept waiting to the very end for the "who done it". Which side was responsible for starting the Battle for Azeroth? I had my guesses, but I didn't see the end coming, not like that.Excellent book, although (obviously) only for WoW fans. I don't see anyone else being quite as impacted as we are.

This was a surprisingly good book. The story was well paced, the main characters well developed and rounded. The end was a bit anticlimactic but I understand that it will be continued further in the game, which is awesome. It lays the ground for the coming conflict between the Alliance and the Horde. Anduin, whom has been continuously reviled in the past, has become an empathetic character and you cannot help but sympathize with him. Watching him stand up against Sylvanas without flinching speaks volumes about his character and, despite being a Horde player, I cannot but feel respect for his courage and moral ground. Like any book, it has its drawbacks and shortcomings; regardless, I still enjoyed it greatly and suggest you give it a go as well.

I enjoy this mangaka quite a bit. She writes solid stories with compelling characters. Like most of her works, this is a slow burn romance (rivals to lovers). There is a natural evolution to the relationship and it’s not toxic. Each chapter has a good flow and balance to it. There is steady character growth as the story progresses. The banter between Onoe and Kaburagi is enjoyable. The overall story arc progresses nicely, and I am looking forward to the next installment. The artwork is on point. The translation is well done (Sublime does good work). The lettering and formatting (in general) is excellent.

I love this mangaka, so ordering this was a no brainer even though I wasn't familiar with it already. It's adorable, and I really enjoyed the story. Clean translation, lovely art. Definitely getting volume two.

Followed it online and I am looking out for more books from this author whose manga I adore so much!

Candy Color Paradox is one of the rare ones of its genre in that it does provide a story beyond the romance of the characters. The plot isn't deep - it's about investigative journalists, the cases they take on, and what they have to do in order to get the scoop. It's the typical enemies to lovers scenario, though, with two clearly bisexual, not gay, leads. Expect a lot of bickering, a lot of foot stomping "I hate him!" and then some sudden kisses in cars between.Story: Onoe is an investigative writer going to learn how to stakeout scoops - something he has no interest in but is forced by his employer to undertake. He is matched up, much to his disgust, with Kaburagi, an experienced journalistic photographer. Turns out Kaburagi stole his girlfriend and pretty much looks down on Onoe. But as the two start working together, sparks fly.The writing isn't going to win any awards but at least there were plenty of 'undercover' work plots to allow the romance to develop over several chapters. Does the movie star have mobster connections? Is the construction company getting grafts? etc. The original premise of our leads is that Onoe finds Kaburagi's lack of conscience over how he gets his inside scoops distasteful - and Kaburagi finds Onoe's morals irritating. It leads to both being frustrated and, of course, Onoe has an automatic dislike of Kaburagi from the beginning since he believes he stole his girlfriend. The illustration work is fine and assured and easy to follow. The story does feel that it drags in places and no one is going to confuse this with having any aspect of realism or being grounded. But those who enjoy the 'enemies to lovers' trope will find this interesting. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher

This is like “Barbarians at the Gate,” except nobody wins.Nobody wins because everything sensible that can be done by corporate raiders has already been done. So the sharks take on one another.A TV anchor who depends on their ilk to come to his daily show is probably not the guy to present the story from that angle. So he doesn’t…The flip side is that he knows them very well. So you do get the whole dirt here and you totally get it from the horse’s mouth. As a long profile of Carl Icahn or Bill Ackman, this is tops. And here’s another thing: I read the FT every day (and also used to read the WSJ every day before Murdoch bought it) and I have to say that until I picked up “When Wolves Bite” it had not sunk in with me that David Einhorn and Bill Ackman are different people: the story’s always the same when you read it in the paper: clean-shaven hedge fund guy announces that he’s bought shares in something semi-dead, is appointing directors and plans to milk it to death and wait until the stock market’s gone up enough that he can sell for a profit regardless.Somewhere around page 68 it became clear to me that David Einhorn and Bill Ackman are different people, because the former’s appearance in the book ends and there’s some 150-odd pages left. The book never picks up, there’s no closure, nor any real scrutiny of Herbalife, but if you’re looking for takeover porn and you’ve already read Barbarians five times, it’s not too bad at all.The proof is I read it in the space of three days!

I'm not sure if this book was really intended to be about the Herbalife battle between Bill Ackman and Carl Icahn or about the way billionaire hedge fund managers use company ownership to fight with each other. It seems to be both. The Herbalife fight started when David Einhorn took a short position against the company based on its business practices. Bill Ackman quickly jumped in as well, but Einhorn didn't stay. He attended a shareholder meeting and asked a few pointed questions to the CEO. Those questions drew broad attention and caused the stock price for Herbalife to drop by 40%. Then Einhorn took his profit and got out. But Bill Ackman stayed with his short position. He was convinced that the Herbalife company is nothing more than a pyramid scheme that targets the poor and minorities and that the company stock would be worthless when that came out. Meanwhile, Carl Icahn had the opposite view of Herbalife, and he bought a major stake in the company, starting the war. They were not the only players in this story, but they were the main characters.Wapner does a good job of providing the background details of the Herbalife story and also provides more information on the men involved. I didn't find it a page turner that I couldn't put down, but it was interesting enough to keep my attention. If you have an interest in the stock market and the market makers, in particular, then you will probably like this book.

As someone who religiously followed the Herbalife saga unfold I can say I thoroughly enjoyed reading When The Wolves Bite. To address some of the initial reviews, Betting on Zero is not a 2 hour summary of this book, and Scott is not the TMZ of Wall Street in my opinion. The majority of the novel followed the series of events regarding the HLF saga. I was pleasantly surprised as to how Wapner narrates the story, keeping a neutral tone throughout the entirety of the novel. Readers will be able to draw their own judgement regarding the ego's involved here. Weaved into the story are aspects of the HLF saga that haven't been told before which warrant picking up this book if you're familiar with the story. My favorite part is the ending on who really won the battle between Icahn and Ackman. Good food for thought.Parts of the story did leave me wanting more, particularly around the CNBC news side of things. At times I found myself wondering if someone unfamiliar with the HLF story would find this book as entertaining as me if they picked it up for a quick read. My guess is they might, but its possible they would interpret this as a Wall Street drama and move on.Overall, the novel is a good read that tailors more to viewers of Scott's CNBC Halftime Report and followers of the HLF saga. I can say with complete confidence that I'm looking forward to Scott's next novel!

The books is a well-researched and detailed account of the Herbalife fight between Ackman (short) vs Icahn (long), with a good overview of how activism investors work in general as well as brief bios for both Ackman and Icahn. It does a good job of outlaying the complexity and multi-dimensionality of activism investment: researching financial fundamentals of a company, waging proxy fights for board control, evaluating the legal situation ("can they sue me back?"), lobbying in Washington, surveying customers on the ground and astro-turfing PR campaigns. However, other than a large set of facts and a step-by-step account of a particular fight, I can't say I learned too many generally applicable principles, hence 4/5.

I think Jim Cramer summed it up correctly on CNBC the day the book was released in April, "it reads like a novel". While I was keenly aware of the public back and forth between Carl Icahn and Bill Ackman regarding their battle over Herbalife, there was a ton that I did not know that led to this showdown of activist investors. 'Wolves' is the culmination of a unique event by Wall Street standards, fortuitous access, great reporting, and entertaining storytelling. If you are interested in money, markets and the battle of billionaires over what appeared to me to be a shady company and business, with a very uncertain outcome, then this book is a home run read.

This book is terrible. Where do I start? This is basically a book of a woman complaining "woe is me", throwing herself a pity party. She blames everyone else for her problems and doesn't accept any responsibility for her terrible decisions. First of all, this book promised what it didn't deliver. From the Amazon description: "Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them." Nope. There is no glimpse at "upper-middle" class other than her judging her clients for being "sad" or "smoking cigarettes" when she smokes herself.Secondly, she doesn't provide a look into the poverty in America. She doesn't recognize herself coming from a place of privilege as a white, American woman. She was afforded opportunities that other marginalized groups may not have received. She describes some of her greatest "sacrifices" as being her daughter not being able to get "organic" milk on the WIC program and her daughter's only "organic" foods were Annie's macaroni and cheese. Really? There are many, many, many Americans that can barely afford groceries and would be thankful to have any milk or food for the week, much less being choosy about ensuring it was "organic". She seems to lament that she can't be a "stay at home mom" which the majority of Americans can't afford. The "stay at home mom" role is something that very few can afford. That isn't a mark of "poverty". Many families have both parents who work, that isn't something "special" or sympathy inducing. Then there is the accident in which she pulled off on the median of a highway and leaves her daughter in the car seat while she walks along the highway looking for a $5 doll. Then she refuses to accept any blame or her role in the accident. She complains about not getting paid to drive to the jobs she works....um....do any of us get paid for our commute? She then gets $4,000 back in a tax refund, which is annoying within itself, but then instead of saving the money and building her future, she buys herself a diamond ring? What?? Her daughter is suffering health consequences from black mold, yet she doesn't nothing about that...no, instead, she wants diamonds. She is so full of self-pity the book is hard to read. One of the most important components of a book is to have a likable main character in which the reader can sympathize with and roots for their success. I tried, but I couldn't make myself root for her. I can't believe this book made its way through an agent, editor and publishing house and became a featured book on Amazon. Did any of them read this first? Super disappointing.

Giving this any sort of bad review almost seems like it would be an act of spite, given the circumstances Stephanie Land is writing from - but still, for the first third of the book I really wasn't liking it, and I couldn't put my finger on why.But at about the halfway point, I realized I had been bait-and-switched - this is not a story of a "maid." It's the story of a working, poor, single mother, dealing with a variety of problems both self-inflicted and beyond her control who *happens* to be a maid. But that's a harder elevator pitch so I understood why "maid" became the focus. But I don't think that's really the book. When I changed my focus to the book I realized it actually was I appreciated it a lot more. At that point, I could look at this as a window to this life. Yes, Stephanie Land is often self-pitying and finds confrontation and judgement around every corner - but of course she would. Her relations with her daughter's father is not good, and she's unable to find a really solid boyfriend, because of course she can't. She wishes for a better life and probably misprioritizes things in the moment instead of thinking long-term, because of course she would. That's the hustle and grind of this life - everything is working against her. I don't believe that in every checkout line she went through she got a hard time from people standing behind her, or the checkout person - but I do believe that it felt that way to her. I don't necessarily think she was exploited by her employers quite as badly as she describes - but I'm sure she felt she was. When you're in this situation, everything is exaggerated and every bit of bad luck is magnified. That's an interesting book - harsh and hard - but interesting. Reading it in that lens made it successful in a different way then the title that had originally misdirected me.I had to go on unemployment once (well, I didn't have too - I was laid off, and it was my right), and it's like going into another mirror universe - society's respect you took for granted is suddenly upended. You're no longer seen as a responsible member of society who can be trusted to be self-reliant. You're a liar, a rube, a sap who can't write a resume. Everything becomes lowest common denominator - the assumption is you're a grifter who's trying to get one over, or an idiot who has to be talked too like a child. I could see very easily how someone in that situation long-term could quickly stop caring about honesty or integrity because the people on the other side assume the worst. I hated it, hated myself, and it was only six weeks. So *of course* Stephanie Land is defensive and self-pitying at times, because society is expecting her to be. That's the role the working poor play - we feel bad for them, toss them some baseball tickets now and then, and make sure they know we're better than they are. When I read her book THAT way, it all came into focus. This is not a book about a maid - it's the book about a life when the only job you can find is being a maid. In that way, it is valuable - because somebody needs to tell that story, and the only way to tell it is if you live it. Even Barbara Ehrenreich's famous "Nickel and Dimed" was sort of a grift - she just pretended for awhile. Great writing, but an act. Stephanie Land isn't acting, so the occasional self-pity and various poor decisions are all part of that real life. It's not that poor people have especially bad luck, it's that they can't easily recover from even sort of bad luck.So - don't look at the title and think it's a book about maids. Think of it as a look into the world of the working poor that most of us look past and hope we never encounter in our own lives. Nobody wants to hold up a line to deal with food stamps, and all the clowns who say "you're welcome" and act like food stamps are being lifted out of their own pockets, should hope and pray the situation never reverses. To digress on the subjects of maids. I was in a big hotel in Mobile, Alabama once and I was getting ice from the bucket or whatever I was doing, and I walked by the maid's station and the group was in a conference. It was probably a dozen African-American women doing their meeting before the day's shift - most of them were young in typical maid uniforms, but there were two older women in business casual leading the meeting. I realized (or at least assumed) that these two women had probably been on staff for years, working up through those ranks. This was their kingdom; I had to think, back in their neighborhoods, they controlled everything - who could get a job at this nice hotel, where it probably was a good place to work, taking calls from mothers trying to get their daughters that opportunity, no doubt laying down the false compliments amid the desperation. How would they choose? I thought of all the compromises they had to make to get to that level of responsibility - all the customers they had to put up with, the managers who probably disrespected them, the owners who looked past them, all to get to this morning meeting. I want to read that book.So I left a very good tip in the room when I left, for some woman I never saw. I think I did. I've told myself I did. I'm a nice guy so I'm sure I did. All white, middle-class Americans are very nice. We're happy to give you $10 tips and free baseball tickets. Just don't hold us up in the checkout line with your food stamps and your crying kid.

This just rubbed me the wrong way. I do think that it is of the greatest importance for people to learn more about what it is like to live in poverty and how one gets there. Happily, there are many excellent books that are relevant here: $2 a Day, Evicted, Both Hands Tied, and Ehrenreich’s book come quickly to mind. There are also a very, very good five-part podcast on poverty (co-produced by On the Media and some one else, probably in 2016), and a couple of sympathetic and illuminating books about payday lenders.I have read all of those books (and quite a few others), and would recommend any of them rather than Maid. Maid is not a terrible book. But neither is it a good one. I was often frustrated by what certainly seemed like obtuseness or lack of insight on the part of this author.

The description led me to believe that this book was going to be of the same genre of $2 a Day and other fine works. Not so. It is a story of a 29 year old woman who gets pregnant with a guy she hardly knows and then gets a job as a maid to support herself. She complains about the maid job, but chose it over working in a coffee shop. She also whines about her parents not helping her with her predicament. Well, she was brought up in privilege in the suburbs; what has she been doing since high school? No wonder her parents think it is high time she stand on her own two feet. She was not born to poverty, but blames the welfare system for keeping her poor and in her place. The book is a narrative on the author playing the victim. She also plays the domestic violence card, where the only violence that the man committed was punching out a window with anger. A bit of insurance fraud was added, too. A sham of a book. Don't waste your time or money on this.

This new book by Getty is a must for those who enjoy Japanese artistic approaches to nature. The photographer--Kazumasa Ogawa--was a remarkable man who, at a young age, discovered photography and pursued it as his passion.Amazingly, after completing his education, he set up a photography shop at age 17, and by age 22, he signed on as a seaman on an American naval warship which brought him to America where he pursued further study in photography. This book shows his art. That was, of course, and era when photography was pictorialist, and clearly, Ogawa considered his final product as a work of art. This book makes for a wonderful gift--to those I love, yes, but also to myself.

A delightful, simple, hand-strung bound book with lovely paintings of flowers.

Both delicate amazing images and a very well written informative introduction. A real lovely small book. Originally I bought on copy for a gift but loved it so much, I bought another one just for me!
