About the Author

WILMA MELVILLE is a retired physical education instructor and the founder of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF). She served as a FEMA-certified canine search specialist deployed in response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Though formally retired, Wilma is actively involved with the SDF's National Training Center in Santa Paula, California. Not prone to slowing down, she still stays in constant motion, bouncing between duties as a mother, grandmother, dog trainer, pilot, and horse enthusiast.PAUL LOBO is a writer, army veteran, and part-time volunteer for the SDF. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, newborn son, and a duo of rescued pit bulls, all of whom constantly expand the bounds of his affection (and, occasionally, his patience).

As someone who saw these dogs in action at the World Trade Center, I can tell you that this book captures the undaunting spirit and tenacity of both the dogs, and their handlers. This will be a very enjoyable read for any dog lover. Sometimes, rescues, and rejects, just need the right place to shine.

What a beautiful book on rescue animals having their lives turned around when they were in need! Being trained to help humans in dire situations or devastating crises circumstances is amazing and gratifying. It also tells of the sadder side of stories where death is involved but resolution is solved by finding the bodies in huge numbered tragedies!

This was a well written book and a very good read.

Great book. I love true stories about real American heros. Thank you, to the trainers, handlers and of course the dogs.

Hero Dogs was hard to put down. I’m a dog lover and trainer and reading the story of these rescued and rejected dogs that turned into disaster search partners was enlightening, exciting, and heart wrenching. Some of these dogs had such a rough start to their lives. It was wonderful reading how their training evolved along with partnering and learning how to be a search and rescue team.The story is told from Wilma’s perspective and gives us the beginning of her partnership with her own dog, Murphy and the frustration she felt from other SAR handlers and SAR organizations. After working the Oklahoma City bombing, she ultimately vows to train 168 dog and handler teams for each victim. She decides to use rescue dogs for her program. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, SDF, was then created.I loved the stories of the different dogs and their individual personalities and quirks. The pairing of the dogs with their human partners was unique and very appropriate. Wilma doesn’t sugar coat the trials of training these dogs and handlers. She also doesn’t let us think that every dog was perfect for disaster search. Some didn’t make the cut, but ended up in a working environment that fit their specific skills. A promise she made at the beginning was that none of these dogs would ever see a shelter again even if they couldn’t become a part of the program. Along the way, she meets and becomes friends with many people that she freely acknowledges as being a part of the whole and not just one person’s goal. It took many people and dogs to get the SDF where it is today. The search and rescue community is definitely better for having her work so hard to have her dream become a reality. Disaster victims couldn’t want a better team on their side than the SDF dog and handler teams.It was hard to put this book down. It flowed very easily from page to page. If you know nothing, or very little about search and rescue this book will be interesting. If you have knowledge of SAR, you’ll enjoy reading about the dogs, training and handlers. I enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend it. I received a free e-copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I do not like reading about Animals dying so when I decided to review this book I knew what I would be reading.I loved reading the amazing stories of animals that help in tragedies from around the United States. How they are just as much hero's as the people who sacrificed their own lives.I learned so much from the talent people who trained almost a majority of recuse animals to find the living as well as the dead.This is a must read book for anyone interested in training animals or service animals. Readers will get amazing insight into the level of training a service dog goes though as well as the dogs and trainers go though to become a Search and Rescue dogs.Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Wilma Melville and Paul Lobo Hero Dogs.

A good read for sure but the title is a little misleading. This book is centered around two specific events and the transition between the two is rather rough. The first 150 pages are about the Mayflower voyage, the first Puritan settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts and their symbiotic relationship with the Pokanoket tribe. The focus of the second half of the book is the Puritan vs. Indian conflict known as King Philip’s War. This involves all of New England and happened about 65 years after the Plymouth settlement is established. Frankly, I was a little lost during the transition and it was a hard to follow for a few pages. I think that a more appropriate title would have helped. Something like the “Mayflower and King Phillip’s War” or “The Puritans in the New World 1610-1676” would have been more accurate.The settlement in Plymouth would not have survived the first year if it were not for their relationship with the Pokanoket Indians. The New England tribes were decimated by European diseases which they had no resistance to. Historians surmise that it was the plague that struck them in the first decade of the 17th century. The plague killed up to 90% of the Indians that had inhabited New England. The area where the pilgrims would eventually establish the first settlement of Plymouth had contained thousands of Indians just a few years prior to Mayflower's arrival. When the Pilgrims arrived it was unoccupied.The Pokanoket tribe was hit especially hard by the plague and they were weakened more so than several of the neighboring tribes. These tribes, such as the Narrangasetts, took advantage of their weakened neighbors. The Pokanoket chief, Massasoit, leveraged his relationship with the Pilgrims to survive against the Narrangasetts. The two groups more than co-existed. The two groups had a symbiotic relationship. Unfortunatly, the Pilgrim’s ancestors had forgotten how critical the Pokanokets were to the survival of their forefathers. Subsequent generations of Puritans took advantage of the Indians. This led to a war with the Pokanokets that on a per capita basis was the bloodiest war in the history of North America.The lessons gleaned form the pages of this book have been repeated over and over again throughout history. Bad policy started King Phillip’s war. It could have been easy to avoid. Revenge was taken by the frustrated Puritans who could not catch the warring factions so they conveniently took revenge against praying and neutral tribes. On the other side, allies of Pokanoket sachem King Phillip killed the relatives of Plymouth descendants of whom King Phillip considered friends. The conflict spiraled out of control.The war was not going well for the Puritans until Mayflower descendant Benjamin Church recruited a strike force of Puritans and Indians from friendly tribes. He was able to convince warring Indians to change sides and join Church’s party. Church granted them amnesty and these Indians in-turn taught Church their tactics. They taught the Puritans how to move without being detected and how to avoid ambushes and how to set them. Church and his combined strike force used these tactics to hunt down King Phillip and to end the war.The book gives Benjamin Church his due as one of the first great early American Indian fighters that you never heard of. Like the pilgrims, Church would not have been successful without his reliance on friendly Native Americans.Enjoy the book.

As an amateur genealogist, I have managed to trace my family to the Mayflower. I read about the Plymouth settlements and the ships in high school, but I think we ignored this part of history in college. This book is so easy to read and so factual that I couldn't put it down. I have both the paperback and the kindle versions - I've found this is the best way to read any book I want to retain and understand fully.

Excellent! The only criticism I have is that I wish it lasted longer. Very readable, and although I taught history at one time there are events brought to light that I did not know like: French fisherman brought the plague to the East Coast. I mean I knew about the diseases brought by earlier explorers to North & South America but I did not know about the plague coming to the North East the year before the Pilgrims arrived. The implications are fascinating.

If you think the popular history of the pilgrims is an accurate and sufficient depiction of the actual events then you owe it to yourself to indulge in this fascinating book which is "lean" enough with the details to keep the reader moving along in this frank and vivid account of the origins of much of this country's history.The fact that 35 million of todays citizens are descendants from that small colony of early settlers is reason enough to warrant your time and attention.

The book was quite interesting. It certainly varies from what I learned in grade school back in the '50s. The clash of cultures combined with the human tendencies on both sides brings closer to reality what happened back in the early Plymouth colony and the other Massachusetts and surrounding colonies. It is certainly worth a read. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it.

Not just a well written book on one of the most famous ships in history, but very informative on the people who decided to cross to unknown lands and what drove them to make such life altering decisions. What little you knew - or thought you knew - about the "Pilgrims" and the indigenous people who took them in is greatly revealed and explained, with much sympathy to the relationships and bonds that were sorely tested in future generations.Nathan Philbrick does a great job of introducing familiar historical facts and then expanding on them and making this old story new. Highly recommend.

This was a highly detailed and historically accurate reporting of the specific period of time surrounding the Plymouth landing. It was a slow read for me because of so many names to try to keep track of (some familiar and some not), and the heavy accent on who did what when and where.The essence of the story is clear however, and the great difference between this historically correct accounting and what I remember learning in elementary school is stunning. For that reason alone, I would highly recommend this book. I would also say that the read got easier for me as I became engaged in the plight of the native indians and the unfortunate decisions made by leadership on both sides.Missing, and disappointing for me, was the exploration of the women in the group of original and first generation of those who landed at Plymouth. This is likely due to the limited information and recording by those women. There was also limited character development, again likely due to the limited information available.I loved learning of the female indian leaders, and the efforts and struggles on the part of all the indian leaders to build relationships and co-exist with the new arrivals. Again, that perspective makes this book a worthwhile read.

This is great kids book. And funny, too. My great granddaughter will love it. I can just hear her giggling away.

I agree with "Bit of a dissapointment". They is alot of things in the book that a person would never spend the time to make, and if he did it would be completely useless. There were however 2 projects that were really nice. The sheepskin slippers were adorable, and I think doable. But the other leather brief case I would love to try and make, but it would be impossible to try and make it with the sketchy instructions they left.To make this bag you would have to already have skills that way. It was dissapointing, because the purpose of purchasing a how to book, is to follow their instructions to be able to make the bag. Also even if you could figure it out, they left miniture patterns in the back. They neither told you any percentages to be able to blow up the pattern, or any written out dimentions on the bag, or any other pattern for that matter. So if your good at guessing what size those mini patterns are, great. Dont waste your money, glad i checked it out of the library first. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 only because of the slippers. I think I could use my own feet as a pattern.

I like Stumpy Nubs, aka James Hamilton. Great YouTuber. Lots of cool projects on his channel and website. This book however is an extension of what he has posted and plans available on his website. The book is basically a book of plans that you can purchase on the website individually. Most of these projects I'll never make but they give me an idea of how he did that. The plans are detailed and the photos show the projects in a clear and easy to understand method. I like the book.The area that could use lots of improvement is the project parts/cut list. It's easy to read and you will get all the measurements for all the parts you need. What is missing? How about a shopping list. Yes I need x amount of parts cut to this size but tell me how many sheets of plywood I need to build that sander and table saw sled. It leaves you guessing of how much material to purchase at the store.Also what would be nice is a general cost estimate for parts and a list of the exact parts used to make the device. Some manufactures parts may not be the same as the other guys and things might not work. So if you are going to sell a book of plans, give us a shopping list and a hint of where you got your stuff.Good first book, I am looking forward to the next with some improvements.

Seeing the tools in person only made Stumpy's ideas, and his skills, more impressive.This book does an excellent job of describing 12 shop-made tools. Like most people who work wood I've knocked out a number of jigs over the years but Stumpy takes things to a level I'd never imagined. The amount of thought put into the details make his tools accurate and convenient. I think many readers will find at least one project (and quite probably more) they'll want to build.Of course hearing Stumpy present his ideas in a live setting adds an element of humor and entertainment that no book could match. That's not a criticism of the book. It's an endorsement of attending one of his presentations.

I enjoy the Stumpy Nubs website and videos and the book is just as thorough, clear, and concise as the instructions there. You really could build yourself quite the workshop if you built everything in the book. Even though I was only buying it for two of the projects (which is cheaper than buying them separately on the website) I would definitely consider building some of the others if I had the space. I would suggest this for anyone who likes to build their own shop stuff. It's also just a great read to get you thinking of other tools/jigs that you could be building for your shop.

Discovered Stumpy several months back on YouTube. Liked his fun approach and his ability to show you how-to for the novice without being too low or boring. Bought the book, just arrived today. Book is better than I anticipated. Not only was it a how-to do on making the machines he's covered on YouTube but he's included plans and measurements. Thx James!

"The Homemade Workshop" is full of ideas for improving the usability of every day portable and simple power tools by adding fences, tables, etc. for more accuracy and stability -- the things that you pay good money for in stationary power woodworking tools. It does this very well. I was less pleased with the coverage of jigs, which was my reason for purchasing this book.

This is a terrific book. While, I have numerous major power tools, I have gotten so much insight about these tools as well as inspiration to build my own. I think this is well worth the money!

If you have an interest in making your own tools, this book is a must have. The router table alone makes it worth it. It gets a ton of use in my shop. It is well written and easy to understand!

Mr Hamilton writes thoughtful books. His detailed instructions instil confidence to try out a project.You might not build everyone in the book, but anyone of them, will give you more functionality that what you can gobuy off the shelf. And then there is that humor... But hey the book is great.

I've been a fan of Stumpy Nubs YouTube videos for some time now, so it was nice to have access to his drawings and instructions to some of his shop made jigs. I usually prefer to buy the jigs I need for my shop, but some of James Hamilton's builds have features that can't be found on store bought fixtures. Thanks Stumpy!
