What an incredible book! I am midway through the book and each section is moving, thoughtful, motivating, inspiring--wow! I am so appreciating each experience of each artist or siblings as artist in the book. I teach in a violent, administratively unsupported middle and high school. This book has made me wonder--how am in feeding my creativity? How am I being creative? The book is helping me redefine what success is for me...yes, I want to make the money, but I have to say--at what cost. I really, really like this book!

This is the 2nd Louden compilation of artist's essays I've read, and it's just as engrossing as the first. I especially appreciate that she finds artists in diverse locations across the country.

Sharon Louden's two books, and her further writing and speaking support an important ideology where in which artists are being supported to talk about their monetary as well as cultural worth, which is translated in these books. They create a new ideology about the way that an artist lives, balances several commitments and continues to make time for their practice. The first books contain essays from artists discussing their own lives and practices. This book contains essays about how artists work with their community. Hrag Vartanian (wrote the forward) believes that the artist should be involved in every area of our lives and involved in planning and politics and business, whereas Sharon Louden goes one step further, believing that the artist needs to make this move themselves, to integrate and share with communities, and move away from the traditional white box scenario. The series of essays written by artists in this book has shown how, and why artists have expanded their practice to include a social or community based element. Buy both of these books. I teach at the college level, and this is a great resource for students, both undergraduate and graduate. Reading these reflections from practicing artists helps them to better understand there truly is no single path to sustaining your career as a practicing artist. I just finished reading The Artist as Culture Producer. As a memoirist/biographer, I'm always intrigued by how people's lives unfold in planned and unplanned ways. Especially those who need to have their creative juices flowing in order to do what they know and love. How does one find the time and place for inspiration when the dog needs to go the vet, the toilet's leaking, your dad fell and looks like he's headed to a nursing home, your back hurts, the internet just went down, and there's not enough money in the checking account to cover the latest batch of bills? Life gets in the way of one's calling so frequently. Those who can rise above all of this are special people.All essays were good, but I particularly liked those by Brett Wallace and Steve Lambert. My congrats to Sharon for taking on this ambitious project and for completing it. Her book book has been, I'm sure, an inspiration to many and will continue to serve as such in the future.

This is the first English translation of The Barefoot Architect (TBA), which was originally written in Spanish in Mexico in 1982. Obviously written with a Third-World audience in mind, TBA nevertheless has a multitude of useful ideas that could be incorporated into North American buildings. At first glance this handbook's 697 pages are intimidating, but fear not - this tome is extremely user-friendly, as it employs only simple drawings and brief text to convey a wealth of handy ideas for laymen/owner builders and professional contractors alike. The only exception to that last statement is that TBA has a rather skimpy index.TBA starts off with a thoughtful design overview which shows how to situate your house, say, to take advantage of the prevailing winds, solar orientation, terrain, and vegetation on your building site. Subsequent chapters cover considerations and methods for building in deserts, jungles, and temperate zones. Granted, not many Norte Americanos will want to build their homes with bamboo, thatch or handmade adobe bricks, but there are plenty of examples of materials and construction techniques that I wouldn't hesitate to use where I live in Northwest Wyoming.The use of modern insulating, siding, and roofing materials that would be familiar and available to Americans is little discussed. Remember that the primary audience for this handbook resides not in North America/First World, but in the southern hemisphere, where most citizens don't have our economic wherewithal. I would not use a lot of TBA's suggestions in the building of my primary residence, but for outbuildings, walls, gardens, get-away cabins, etc., I would use this book in a heartbeat for my construction bible. Thoreau would have loved it. Perhaps in a post-peak oil world, TBA will become a must-have resource for those of us who have to live more simply and take advantage of the building materials close at hand. Most discussions in TBA readily stimulate one to think of practical uses for the natural resources that surround us all.

After my wife and I had finished writing The Straw Bale House and were beginning work in Mexico on a number of projects, we came across this book during our travels. We loved it so much we set out trying to find out where we could get more copies. The search took us to a bookstore in Mexico City where we bought several cases to bring back to the States. They were so popular with friends that we gave away/sold all of them in almost no time at all. It's just a marvelous little book with simple but very clear illustrations. Quite truthfully I'm totally amazed that Lloyd Khan the publisher came across this book and decided to print it in English. But then again, that's what makes Lloyd the entertaining publisher that he is.

This is a very interesting book.It appears to have been written for Peace Corps volunteers or their ilk.It is profusely illustrated with line drawings that complement and clarify the content.It overs all aspects of home building for those in developing areas (OK that was the PC version, it really is for people with nothing, that are dirt poor, that have to make do w/what's close at hand, i.e., those in poverty.)That being said I found it to be very educational because if tables were reversed, I wouldn't have a clue and this book might get me started out right.

This "how to" approach addresses the 2nd and 3rd world's building practices from the direct perspective of someone who understands building in the tropics. A vital and useful book for any interested student of the best practices for 1000 aspects of the diy community building in impoverished areas of the world. Completely practical and honest, and vitally up-to-date for building anywhere but the hideously code-infested wealthy Western world. Truly a gem.

If you plan on ever building in the third world (or off the grid in the developed world) this book is filled with tips and techniques that are used by traditional builders the world over. There is a section on everything from jungle construction to all the various forms of waste management in the world.

Great book. Simple but has lots of design principles to help the “diy” type design their off grid home.

This is a fabulous book. It is filled with a real sense of hope and empowerment about one's place in the world. And with clear diagrams and drawings for constructing energy-efficient, locally sustainable habitation. My only complaint (talk about 1st world problems...) is that it's written for a Southern Hemisphere audience, so directives about solar gain can become confusing, e.g. the north wall in this book is the south wall to me.

I recommend this to engineering students getting involved in development and construction in majority world settings. More than just how to: WHY TO. Great illustrations, almost could use overseas without any translation, the diagrams are that clear.

So I will start by saying that we are not following the Keto diet. But my husband is diabetic and so I was looking for low carb recipes that we could all enjoy as a family. I also follow a low sodium diet for medical reasons.The book is short but it was also free so I can't really complain too much about that. I did, however, notice several typos which always irks me. The typos were occasionaly in the nutritional information. For example, the cauliflower hummus with harissa cracker was listed as having 0mg of sodium. However, the hummus and cracker recipes *each* called for 1/2 teaspoon of salt. If you do buy this, I would definitely double check the nutritional values listed. For that reason and the fact that maybe only a quarter of the recipes appealed to me, I gave it a 2 star rating.

Overall packed with a lot of information. But, I feel he pushes supplements a lot. And I worry most people can’t afford to buy the healthier foods and all the supplements. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly see their value. However, if a person is on a limited budget, I believe it’s better to spend money on quality food. I also found some of the content repetitive. I am a big user of essential oils, but I don’t think they needed to be mentioned in detail with each condition. These sections could be better organized. Great examples of patients, family members, and friends are provided. The recipes and list of foods to eat is helpful. But, I think the plan could be laid out a little easier to understand. Most people would do better with longer meal plans. Overall, good information and a great resource. However, most of the information is already available.

Read this with our brownie troop as part of the steps to earn the "Girl Scout Way" badge. We all learned a lot about our founder in a fun and easy to read way. We'll be using and sharing this book with future troops.

"Here Come the Girl Scouts" is a fun, beautifully illustrated book about the founder of the Girl Scouts in America. My daughter picked this book up at the library, we took it home to read, and the next day - we registered her for scouting- it made her THAT excited!! People seem confused as to what Girl Scouts actually DO, aside from camping out and selling delicious cookies, and this book is a good, easy to understand explanation of the Girl Scouts. I read this book at all of our recruitment event for Girl Scouts as well as award this book in a raffle for all events I lead for younger troops! A must read, must own book for younger scouts!

I bought this for my Brownie troop while they worked on their story telling badge. I have to say I think it is a great book. It is full of lots of information about Juliette and how she started the Girl Scouts. It also has lots of neat sayings sprinkled throughout. The girls did find it difficult to read a loud because the got confused with what was part of the story and what was a saying. Still I would highly recommend it for younger girl scouts and their leaders.

I read this to my troop at our first troop meeting. The girls listened well, stayed quiet, and payed attention while I was reading to them.

Juliet Gordon Low is a Shero! Her story is the story of the Feminist movement and highlights using personal struggle as fuel for a worthy cause. Juliette was an adventurer and believed in the power of women and inclusiveness.

As a Girl Scout leader I got this for my girls. It’s a little much for my Daisies but they love the pictures and it is great for teaching about Why we do Girl Scouts

After two years of marriage counselling with a leading counselor in our area and almost a year of therapy with a highly recommended sex therapist, I was ready to just hang it up and deal with the eventual divorce. Though we love each other deeply, there was a huge chasm between us that seemed impossible to bridge. It was as if we were speaking in different languages. Hour after hour I sat in the counselling/therapy sessions and the harder I tried to "listen", the more distant and broken I felt. We went over and over the same issues with no one offering any real possible resolution. I just could not understand why she could not "hear me", my points were valid and reasonable, logical and concise, just as I am sure she felt hers were, but no matter how I approached and re-approached any given issue from different angles, the results were the same: I left each session in emotional turmoil, feeling manipulated, coerced, ignored, used, and felt worse most of the time than before we went in. I know/knew our particular "issues" are very common in marriage, but "talking" about them just made them all the more blatantly painful. Worst of all, nothing we tried was even remotely "fixing" anything. I was at the point I that I was fed up. I sure wasn't going to "cave in" to her demands for what I felt were even more changes to my behavior or even further concessions from me. It was painfully obvious that she was in a place where she refused to budge on anything. Our sex life went from "pretty good" to "gone". Every session seemed to just make the situation worse. The issues we had were now openly on the table but resolution was no where in sight. So now we were aware of the problems, but no solutions were in sight. Don't get me wrong, counseling and therapy weren't entirely a "bust". Because of the time we spent there, I learned a whole lot about "my part" in our marital problems and probably never would have found this book without experiencing the personal growth I needed. I willingly began to work on "me" and stopped focusing on "her". In this regard, the counselling and therapy was "great" for identifying our issues, my issues, and eventually pinpointing a probable cause for our "sexual meltdown". But my repeated gut reaction was that we kept going in the same old circles, never quite getting to "what" was causing it and "what" we might do to heal our marriage. As a man, if something broken I want to know what it is, why it broke, what it was that broke it, what I need to do to fix it, and then obtain the proper tools and materials to do my best to repair it. If I caused it to break, then I will learn what not to do the next time, or at least the time after that. I also know that if I am really upset, mad, angry, frustrated, that it is useless for me to even attempt the repair until I can calm down and regain my focus. I could not see why it was so hard for specialists in this field to guide us in the right direction. Yes, they helped me understand many of the parts involved that were in disrepair and sometimes pointed me in the right direction to fix each part, but damn, where were the instructions we needed to put the "whole" thing back together and tell us what was broken and how it got that way in the first place? We were both living in misery. I was lost for answers despite hundreds of hours of reading and researching, working a 12 step program, diligently attending the counseling sessions while spending thousands of dollars, and though I was gaining newfound perspectives on "me", I, we, could not find a way that would put "us" back together again. I went to my own private psychologist, she went to a psychotherapist for EMDR therapy, I became involved with a great codependency program in our area specifially for me, and she continued in her 12 step codependency program. We both began reading book after book, each one great at describing the "what", but never adequately addressing the "why", and more importantly, "why" what we were doing wasn't bringing us any closer to having any hope all of ever resolving our "issues", of making our marriage loving and compassionate like it once was. And then... what I now consider to be a miracle, happened. On one of my so far futile quests for answers, I stumbled across this book. The title intrigued me, so I dug a little deeper. Research on this book indicated it had excellent reviews by some of the other prominent writers in this field. The few negative reviews of note were written by a few marriage counselors in what I now feel were vain attempts to justify their stereotypical approaches, which simply were not working for me, for "us". (This book even explains why the mainstream approach to helping couples with relationship problems will almost NEVER work for a man.) Steven Stosny and Patricia Love approached our marital breakdown from a perspective NO ONE had fully put together for me, for us. Yes, I was familiar with every term they use, even a few of the concepts, but this book FINALLY provided us both with the reasons WHY what we were doing wasn't working and probably never would work. Both Steven and Patricia were well-schooled in the traditional approaches to relationship counseling, but guess what? After years and years of using the standard approaches and either failing, or having "less than optimal" success, they decided to uproot the system and try and figure out WHY it wasn't working. The result of their efforts is an astoundingly different way of looking at marriage, relationships, the differences in the way men and women process things, and the differences in our emotional makeup. (John Gray grasped parts of this in his "Mars and Venus" books) In the end, our "issues" aren't the problem, at least they aren't at the root of the problem, they are more like "symptoms" from deeper underlying causes which, until this book, remained an unidentifiable mystery to me, to us. If your marriage feels broken, unrepairable, damaged beyond hope, I urge you to read this book. All the pieces of our indecipherable martital problems puzzle which I felt were written in hieroglyphics, were suddenly were comprehendable. Finally, someone had created a basket which would hold all our "issues", personal problems, and did so in a logical straighforward manner, explaining EXACTLY what was going on. For me, as a man, even more importantly, they explained "WHY" it was happening and provided understandable reasons for it. If you have looked for answers as diligently as I have, felt you have truly done your best, taken every step you could think of to put your marriage back together, and like me, still found yourself going in circles, spiralling hopelessly down an eddy of despair, read this book. If your partner is as flustered about your marriage as you are and just as committed to making it work as you are, the approach brought forth in this book will change your lives. I have no motivation for writing this review, I had never heard of Steven Stosny or Patricia Love. It is extremely rare for me to take the time to review any product, no matter how good. For me to take the time to do this, a product or concept has to be life-altering, absolutely phenomenal. I felt I owed it to any other couple out there that may be going through the pain and misery I have. I am not exaggerating anything with regard to what I have learned from this book, am still learning from this book and daily applying to our relationship. I simply felt compelled to write this review because I know how miserable a failing marriage can be. For the first time in years I feel real hope and firmly believe that our marriage is on the mend. My wife and I are reading and rereading this book off the same iPad, at the same time. No, our issues are not yet resolved, we haven't even tried at this point. But the weight that those issues put on both of us is gone. We now know the basis from which our problems stemmed aren't so much the "issues" themselves, but more in the why and how they became so magnanimous in the first place. We weren't connected anymore and our attempts at "talking through it" just made it all worse. Thankfully, we have been given a way to work through things with love and compassion, because we are finally "connected" again, and understand the primary reasons we lost this connection and just couldn't get it back. My hope and prayer for anyone reading this review is that you too find the comfort and solace, peace and serenity, that the information in this book will provide you. And that you are finally able to "reconnect" with the one you love.... and stay that way.Peace, DougU4

This book is really working for us. Married 14 years. Not good at communicating and honestly I thought my guy had turned into kind of a jerk. I didn't understand. 40 pages into this book my insight into his way of thinking was truly life-changing. And for him, understanding my mindset instead of being annoyed or frustrated. He was happy when I told him if he reads this we don't need to have talks about it. The "without talking about it" part is great for men of few words. Our only talks on this have been "do you find it enlightening/helpful?" and we both agree we do, that's it. Simple. No arguing, no blaming, not asking each other to change. And I said at the beginning this is a hundred times cheaper than counseling, so let's try it. He said okay. Such a good decision. We're both happier feeling understood. I'm more secure knowing he gets me now, even though we're quite different. I honestly wish someone gave me this book as a gift 14 years ago! The amount of turmoil and struggle would've been waaaay less! Better late than never though.

While it's still to be determined whether this book will help save my marriage, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt it has given a whole new perspective. This books read like my whole entire 14 year relationship (9 years married). It has given understanding about what's going on and how to go about fixing. Most importantly it's not telling me to act more like a woman... where I think many of these types of books miss the mark.

I've purchased this book now as a paperback and as an audio book. I'm not yet married, but I've read a ton of relationship books. Being a guy, most books are sadly how I (the man) am just wrong and need to change. I'm willing to change, but I really want to understand myself and women in order to change. This book has given me more insight into how I think and how women think, and about the male/female dynamics in a relationship.I've recommended this book countless times to a lot of people. In fact, if I had read this years earlier, I would probably be married by now. I now read this every other month or so to really understand the deeper concepts. Well done, both authors. I hope everyone can read this and learn from it.

Like quite a few comments on here I had to stop reading within a few chapters as I could not handle the horrible stereotyping.We should cater to the male's ego while taking bruises to our emotions.Simply put we should be loving and put our spouse first. I agree wholeheartedly in that we collectively in our community fail to teach men how to handle their emotions and I can agree with Matt in "Must Be This Tall to Ride" that some men are clueless to a degree but I cannot agree to allowing myself willingly to being hurt emotionally, making sure not to react badly, and he will change his behavior.
