I injured my neck in a car accident 2 years ago. I purchased Dr. Taylor's book which is full of practical, tried and true non surgical treatments for neck pain. I tried many of the suggestions that are made in this book including daily stretches and exercises. When I did go to the neurologist I took this book, along with a list of different treatments I had tried and a headache journal I had started to keep track of the severity and how often I was having neck pain and headaches. I felt like I went to the doctor much more informed after having read Dr. Taylor's book. It is written for the laymen but full of practical and wise solutions and options for anyone suffering with chronic neck pain. I would highly recommend this book if you are suffering from neck pain and headaches/migraines related to your pain. -Tanya Woods R.N.

If you're serious about getting rid of and truly understanding your neck pain and your treatment options then this is the book for you! Dr Taylor simply explains complex diseases processes, disorders, anatomy, and available treatments in a way that a lay person (non-medical) can understand, however, is in depth enough for a medical professional to learn many things from. 5/5 stars!!!

For one who has suffered from severe chronic neck pain for years I found this book very enlightening. Very easy read, easy to understand. I also realize now that physical activity plays an important role in reovery, this book only helps to confirm the role exercise plays in that process. Instructions on how to stretch and exercise the neck and surronding area is included. Surprisingly the book also highlights traditional eastern medicine as an alternative.

I have had chronic neck pain over 20 years and purchased this book in hopes of understanding and finding an alternative to what hasn't worked for me. No luck yet, but not the book or writers fault. I'd rate it higher if I was now pain free.

I DID NOT RECIEVE IT!!!!! INSTEAD I RECIEVED "WOMEN'S GYNECOLOGIC HEALTH" OF WHICH I HAVE NO NEED.

Dr.Taylor’s book is a great read for those suffering from chronic neck pain. Full of illustrations, explanations, exercises, and methods.well layed out and researched. The exercises have loosened my neck and lessened my pain. I feel Great!

I bought this book for my 4 year old son who is part African in order to, facilitate his learning about his roots. In general, the book is OK but, what is not true to form is the portrayal of most of sub Saharan Africa as a village. All the stories are about poor kids in villages with mud huts! From the book, one would assume yes, Africa is not a continent but, just a series of villages with no electricity nor running water; perpetuating yet another myth about Africa. It would have been good to also read about the bustling city of Douala where kids rush to catch the school bus or, loud Nairobi with the matatus that take the school kids on field trips. I have not found a book like this yet so, a project in our home is to create one like this for our son.

I had purchased this book to use in a Montessori School in Nigeria. It is full of good information, but was not appropriate for the preschoolers I was working with. I would recommend the book for middle school children.

My daughter (3) loves this book and I love reading it to her. We are both learning something. Lovely, vibrant illustrations keep her interest. Do note this only covers a few countries, and only about 1-2 "snapshot" paragraphs each, so it's more appropriate for little ones, up to maybe up to 6 or 7. There is a very nice guide in the back listing all African countries with a couple of key facts each.I would like it if there were a longer and more in depth version for older children. We can't get enough!

I love the illustrations in the book. The narration is also OK. This is the best book I've seen depicting Africa. The reason why I gave it three stars is that the book still holds a lot of stereotypes. Also, they do not highlight every country, despite what the summary stated.

I really wanted to like this book but I was disappointed that every new page jumps to a different country and story. It just wasn't what I was expecting and it was hard to get to through and doesn't hold children's interest.

Ordered fro someone else

I really love how it talked about all the countries in Africa

I love this book and all it presents. It's easy to read and my son loves it! I love the varying perspectives in the story.

One of the challenges of being a parent to a toddler is managing the ‘chaos’ while not allowing it to suck you into its vortex. A toddler is a powerful thing. And if you’re not careful, he can take you down with everything else he pulls off the shelf. I spent 10 joyful years as a classroom teacher shaping young adults. But when I became a father who was in charge of caring for our son during the day, I was a fish out of the water. My heart was there, but my hands didn’t know what to do. The internet is surely not short of support in this matter. In my search to tame this wild beast before me and keep me from having a terrible no good bad day, hunting I did go. But my wife and I weren’t sure our budget could afford (nor thought we needed) the ‘promoted’ material, and our child actions didn’t seem to match the one dutifully sitting at the table threading a disc….we tried. He’d rather see what each did while flying through the air. More importantly, as a high school teacher, I learned real quick that students don’t like worksheets (that’s toddler speak for flash cards). They want to experience the world around them…in 3D. That’s what I wanted to share with my son. While also getting the floors swept, taking care of the laundry, washing the car, shopping for groceries, etc. That’s what Ayelet is helping me with…. “Simplification” and the means for me to provide my son with “high-quality interactions and opportunities to engage with the world”. Most of all, for me personally over this last month (and I think this is probably the secret sauce that other books and blogs DON’T provide), is that she has helped me see more clearly that “we are already engaging in the kinds of activities that can make a huge impact on our toddler’s development….we already have the material we need”. Ayelet's words ring true for me; Pinterest can be helpful and fun, but we can’t forget that “it’s the experience of words, objects, people, and ideas in a variety of contexts, settings, and environments that support your child’s learning.” Ayelet helps you understand and know ways to do so. For me, it’s what Ayelet says early on that captures the essence and source of help she’s been for me: “It’s the way [toddlers] are able to play, the words that are used around them, the musicality of those experiences, and the movement of their bodies that supports” your child’s later learning. What she says next is where I struggle and she comes through like none other that I’ve read: “As adults, we often have a difficult time connecting these things.” I was comfortable in the classroom. But the home is not a classroom and neither is a toddler a young adult. And Ayelet has been helping me, not just navigate these uncharted waters but also enjoy the journey, as she puts it, “so you can move together through the years of toddlerhood.” That’s the support Ayelet’s well-researched material provides here. Natural ways to support how toddlers learn—“through interactions with us and with the objects in their environment.” Daniel and I carry laundry from one side of the hall to the other or go find a box we can get into and out of. We flick the light on and off, making funny faces when he turns it on, freezing when it’s off. We also go outside to stack rocks or see which is the heaviest rock we can throw, or transfer water from one bucket to another and back again….and again…and again. And can I tell you that trips to Target are no longer a rat race of getting in and out quickly so this little volcano doesn’t erupt? With him, I might narrate the process of what’s happening. If we witness “big feelings” in others, I’ll make comments to him and predictions about what might be going on, “That boy is jumping up and down. I think he found a favorite toy!” Play, Talk, Sing, Move. Those are the ingredients, the four pillars she provides. The book guides you month by month ‘for learning about your child’s development and what you can do to support it…that require little to no materials.’Since starting to read and apply the suggestions in this book, time with my son has been enriched. If you want to feel confident that you are supporting all areas of your toddler’s development, and doing it well, I encourage you to read this book.I do want to say that I took the opportunity to receive an advance copy of this book. And so happy that I did.

Are toddlers really the bewildering creatures everyone says they are? Does this have to be the hardest three years of my life? All I know is that I’ve been waiting for this resource since my son turned one, and now that it’s here as he’s about to turn two, I’m so grateful! As his brain keeps leaping ahead, I find myself in constant flux of awe and annoyance, but reading this book has given me a lot of demystifying strategies that have increased my “Wow!” moments and some useful perspective for my “OMG!” ones. This book provides three years worth of fantastic examples of positive, empathetic, budget friendly (you already have everything you need in your own home!) parenting wins through the wonderful world of play. It is perfect for parents, nannies, and therapists alike. As both a stay at home mom and speech-language pathologist, and I cannot recommend this book enough. It provides an outstanding and accessible month-by-month guide to supporting your toddler through a basic four-part framework of Play, Talk, Sing, and Move, giving you the caregiver an easily digestible nugget of evidence-based methods for interacting with your toddler through this seeming mine field of development. I appreciate how easy it is to move through as a guide, so you can pick out activities that meet your toddler where he or she is, and it explains when and why you may be seeing a particular behavior or new skill emerge. Even though it is organized by month, I think the framework gives you the flexibility to create opportunities based on what your child or client needs to be supported in their own development. Two “lessons” have really resonated with me. I found two different approaches to tackling challenging behaviors very illuminating and reassuring. Each provided a practical approach (easy to make social stories) and a shame-free way to respond to throwing (the little scientist at work, performing experiments to see how the outcome changes in different contexts). These recommendations helped me change up the ways we had previously been tackling these issues to meet his new cognitive level. Additionally the Heavy Work concepts have also given me the courage to say “YES!” to activities I may have otherwise shied away from, like letting my son carry a bag of groceries in. Who knew that would spark so much joy by creating an opportunity for him to get one of his needs met? And it was free! This book has also helped me be a better play partner with my son instead of a constant director, which has been so much more fun for us both!I’ll be giving this book and its companion, Understanding Your Baby, to every expecting mom I know and recommending it to anyone who ever asks for quality resources for their family!

As an Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologist for 7 years, I'm always on the hunt for resources for my families (and myself!). Ayalet has delivered with "Understanding Your Toddler" and shares research-backed information in an approachable, breathable way. It's so easy to get caught up in the "I need to be doing something more! What am I missing? What proof is in the pudding that this is something that will enrich, support, supplement, encourage, identify, calm, and empower?!?" Just like caregivers frequently do double and triple duty, this book provides (1) informative developmental guidelines (2) ideas for implementation (not just facts! "how-to's"!) and (3)support and encouragement to use what you already have. I'm eager to share this with my caseload of 20+ families, and would encourage this for any parent or professional looking to gain fun, new (or reinforced!) ideas to maximize time with their toddler.

The Art of Stone Skipping and Other Fun Old-Time Games: Stoopball, Jacks, String Games, Coin Flipping, Line Baseball, Jump Rope, and More, by Jayne Jaudon Ferrer

Review

Ferrer transports readers to a time gone by, when stoopball and jacks, string games and stickball, hopscotch and marbles were the staples of childhood. As Ferrer notes in his introduction, games have been a part of childhood since the beginning of time, helping children “learn new skills, discover unknown strengths, and build peer relations—which translates directly into solving problems, creating solutions, and becoming a good team player.” Divided into seven sections, the text covers all sorts of games in all sorts of venues: ball, brain, solitary, car, card, group and partner. The format puts the name of the game (and its aliases), number of players, object and materials needed right at readers’ fingertips, summarizing the basic rules in an easy-to-follow paragraph and listing any additional rules, hints or tips in separate, bulleted sections. Most include variations to either modify the challenge or offer variety. “Fun Facts” sections are set off in black and scattered throughout, providing background on many old favorites (Bingo was invented in 1500s Italy), as well as some fascinating factoids (the stone-skipping world record is 51 skips!). Grayscale drawings break up the text and help illuminate some of the more difficult activities (string games, yo-yo tricks), though they also introduce a measure of modernity to what is largely a retro-themed book.A wonderful resource for households, schools, Scouting groups and other organizations catering to kids. —Kirkus ReviewsThis interactive manual is fun to read and even more fun to put into practice. From hopscotch to dodge ball, jacks to solitaire, and string games to memory games, all types of activities are included. Games to play with a ball, with cards, in a car on the go, alone, or in a group are all here to be enjoyed. Th einstructions are clear and easy to follow. There are also historical and factual assides for many of the entries. Some include variations on the main game or alternate names for the activity that have been used through the years. The illustrations depict children demonstrating a particular aspect of a game or just enjoying themselves playing. This is a great resource for parents and teachers, as well as for children.—School Library Journal

I have a Girl Scout troops, and when I found this book at the library I knew I had to purchase it for future reference. It has tons of games I played as a kid in the 70's and tons more I have never heard of before. In a world where kids only play games that require a battery, it's nice to have a reference of great games that build team work and increase exercise.

As a relative "old timer" living in a technologically oriented world, I'm often queried by my young friends what I did as a child with no Internet, no video games, and no DVD player. "The Art of Stone Skipping" is a great resource for all the activities I did as a child, as well as describing the infinite pleasures of using your imagination. I would recommend it for anyone who's interested in how to play without technology.

love it

This was bought as a gift for a 10-year-old girl, and she and her friends love it! So many new games to learn and try out!

My grandchildren and I have had the best time trying out all these low-tech activities, much to the joy and surprise of my little darlings!

5 & 8 yr. old grandsons love video and smart phone games. Hope to interest them in some old fashioned games also.

I'm so happy to have found this book! This summer, I was so tired of watching my children wasting days inside with their heads bent over their tablets, playing video games. Since we discovered Stone Skipping, we have had tons of fun, together! We have been playing outside actually interacting with each other. What a great way to reconnect with your family! I highly recommend this to any parent who is losing your children to the tech world. Love, love, love it!

A fun book. Gave it to my son so he could pass these games onto his sons and daughters.

Arabian Delights: Recipes & Princely Entertaining Ideas from the Arabian Peninsula (Capital Lifestyle Books), by Amy Riolo

Review

Rest assured that someone who owns dozens of cookbooks will not have anything like this paperback on their shelves. Food historian Riolo, who maintains homes in Germantown and north of Cairo, divulges recipes she acquired in the guest palaces of Mecca, Medina and Jeddah. The food is presented in cultural-culinary menus, with tips and a preparatory timeline for putting on a whole celebratory meal for Eid or Ramadan, or an Arabian dessert party or tea party. That's not to say the recipes can't be appreciated on their own. People who do not drink alcohol are always looking for worthy substitutions, so Riolo's Sunset, Red Sky and Kiwi fruit juice cocktails might work well. (The Washington Post Gift Cookbooks List)Amy is a nationally recognized culinary expert, food writer, and cooking instructor based in the Washington, D.C. area. Amy’s talk was titled ‘Incense and Spice: Entertaining in the Arabian Peninsula.’ She talked about the history of the cuisine of the Arabian Peninsula and how the incense and spice trades impacted…An incense censor and perfumes were passed around the room for all to experience a touch of Arabian hospitality. Amy then spent the next 35 minutes answering many questions from the audience. (CHoW Line)What we know in America of Arabian food and life is colored by politics, by the local falafel truck, and maybe by ignorance. But with her book on the meals and traditions of Arabian entertaining, Amy Riolo seeks to illuminate a culture and move cooks beyond pita chips and hummus. Riolo has not only gathered recipes, but put them in the context of Arabian life…Riolo has immersed herself in Arab culture, and her recipes, gathered from home cooks and local restaurants, have a taste of authenticity. ..With her similar attention to detail, Riolo opens a window onto a culture that is much with us, but very little understood. And what better place for understanding than over a shared meal. (Appetite for Books, Books-for-Cooks.com)This is a wonderful version of a classic Middle Eastern soup and seems like the perfect dish for a winter night. The original version contained incense, a common practice with slow cooking soups in the region. Pure resins like frankincense are actually safe to eat, and were once used like chewing gum. During cooking, the fragrant scent of the incense rose into the air and mingled with the spice in the food for a delightful effect. This version uses dried lemon and saffron instead of incense. From Arabian Delights; Menus, Recipes and Princely Entertaining Ideas from the Arabian Peninsula (Capital Books 2007) by Amy Riolo, a nationally recognized culinary expert, food writer, and cooking instructor based in the Washington, D.C., area. (Sheilah Kaufman, Jewish Women International)We had the chicken kebabs from Arabian Delights this weekend. I loved the flavor from the pinch of saffron in the marinade. The aromatic dish was so tasty with such authentic flavor. I also prepared the Sesame Chapati recipe to have with it: delicious. (Kathy Kitchens Downie at Cooking Light)Amy Riolo's book, Arabian Delights, is rich with distinctive, yet easy recipes using readily available ingredients, for both family dinners and elegant events. What is most important to me, is that the book conveys a clear historical perspective of the peoples living on the Arabian Peninsula and the development of their cuisines. Arabian Delights gave me an understanding of Muslims and Islam through its culinary traditions and concepts that I've never had before. (Dolores Kostelni, The Happy Cook, radio host and author)

The recipes are not appealing to me and don't invite me to try. There's too much stuff about occasions in Muslim life about which I don't care and the title is ambiguous because I guess she wants to sell her book. No delight for me. I'll stick to Moroccan.

The Black & White format seems at odds with the colorful nature of both the cover and the subject matter. One would expect to be able to see the vibrant coloring of the dishes to go with the lively contents of the pages, no? Still a nifty cultural compendium of recipes and anecdotes.

My sister has been learning to cook Arabic food and has only found a few recipes online that she can really do perfectly ! For Eid this year I bought her this book and they have already made a couple things out of it ! Its been a hit !Great book and I highly recommend it. My sister recommends it and her Palestinian husband recommends it ! :)

the book is wonderful. It is a foundation cook book. Buy it, make everything in it and you will want to cook more.

I ordered this book because of my interest in Middle Eastern cooking. With its focus on Gulf Arab cooking, this is a rare collection of recipes. The author's knowledge of and deep affection for the cultures of the Middle East shine through on every page. This book makes an excellent read simply for its cultural content. The recipes are presented in menu format; the author provides a timetable which seems very helpful for each menu. Even for preparing only one recipe, there are explicit instructions on what can be prepared in advance, and what steps must be prepared in advance (marinating etc). This book contains many recipes that I have not seen in any other cookbook (and I have quite a collection!).Purists may protest, but I love the recipes where the author has incorporated "convenience" foods like crescent roll dough or pull-apart biscuit dough. I have tried many recipes and I have had delicious results. Particular stand-outs so far are the Fish in Saffron Bechamel Sauce (which I made with catfish nuggets), Mini Lamb Pitas (which I prepared with thin-sliced beef), Zucchini with Tahini Dressing, and Croissants with Wild Thyme. The Fish in Saffron Bechamel is one of the best dishes I have ever eaten.

While exploring various books of Middle Eastern Cuisine and history, I came acrossArabian Delights: Recipes & Princely Entertaining Ideas from the Arabian Peninsula (Capital Series) by Amy Riolo, just published in the fall of 2007. What a treasure! This is exactly the kind of book I've been looking for that combines Arabian cuisine with it's rich culinary history. Fabulous food and education all in one!My passion for exploring foods of the Middle East combined with a thirst for their culinary history (how did the spice trade effect various regions?) is lovingly & authentically represented in this book. Ms. Riolo has researched and chosen wonderful recipes to showcase the beautiful lands of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Yeman & Saudi Arabia. These recipes come alive and you can almost smell the delicious array of delicacies represented between these pages. My kitchen will be smelling so good soon!Sections include: A History of Arabian Cuisine, Regional Differences in Arabian Cuisine, Tips to Remember When Entertaining and more. Ms. Riolo has given us another gift by showcasing these recipes via the different feasts/celebrations where they would be traditionally eaten. Wonder what to serve your guests for a Ramadan Breakfast or Dinner? How about the celebratory foods for an Eid feast? Want to delight your children with an Arabian Tea Party or Pearl Diving Party?Living & growing up in America, many of us remember the traditional foods our families served at Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah & more. We can even smell them. The same applies to other countries as well. Living in the DC area which has an abundance of cultural diversity, it's wonderful to finally have a great resource to further understand the foods & feasts of our Middle Eastern neighbors. What's even better is the fact that Ms. Riolo is local in DC (she splits her time between DC & Egypt) and offers culinary lectures and recreational cooking classes throughout the area! She also works with another well know author/cooking teacher/food editor/ and lecturer, Sheilah Kaufman who wrote the Forward in this book. Personally I can't wait to attend some of their cooking/lecture events!Would I recommend this book? YES!! If you love the Middle Eastern foods and are searching for unique recipes infused with culinary history, this book is for you. If you live in the DC area, why not sign up for one of their classes? I know I will.

I bought Arabian Delights to expand my culinary horizons. My favorite cookbooks are the ones that tell stories and this one didn't disappoint! The author tells many stories about her experiences and gives the background behind each "menu" - all very entertaining. My experience with cooking middle eastern food was nil until trying these easy to follow recipes - everything tried has been delicious and fun to make. Ive really enjoyed the subtle new flavors that these dishes bring to the table. Glad Arabian Delights is on my cookbook shelf !!!
