VERY detailed. I wasn't expecting that much information. We're taking these on a boat in the BVI. I just wanted to know if it was a Sergeant Major. These books will just about tell you the fish's middle name, where he lives and what wine he likes with dinner.
I didn't realize how good these are until I used several other guides. I use the fish book most. The biggest difference is the small drawings by most photos pointing out the key features for distinguishing one fish species from another. Multiple phases are often shown for fish that change with age or sex. The other information is good - much more than just ID, but also not packed with details only an ichthyologist cares about.The other books are equally high in quality, but with different details. Corals and sponges are so variable that it's impossible to show a picture of every form, but they seem to do a good job under the circumstances. If you want to identify what you have seen or photographed in this part of the world, get these books.
This is my bible when snorkeling. The full color photos of hundreds of fish, coral and sea creatures are worth the price. Then, there is the detailed information on each species. The authors' deep knowledge of their subject and respect for the ocean shines through every page. When we head to the Caribbean, I always take one of these 3 volumes in the suitcase. Soft cover but excellent quality, I first came across the fish volume of the set on a dive boat that was taking us for a snorkeling excursion. It was much thumbed through but holding up well in the wet environment, and helped me to identify an obscure fish, the Permit, that I have rarely found in other references. I believe this is a recognized standard in the field. If you buy one reference on fish and creature I.D. this should be it. The authors also have a condensed version of one volume made specially for travel.
We bought these after our diving / snorkeling trip and spent a lot of time going through it remembering what we saw. Photos are excellent quality, easy reference to identify species of fish. We will take it with us on our next diving vacation.
Lets just say that if ur a diver or an up and coming marine biologist, this is the book set to buy if you need to know any and every species of fish, coral and critter. I initially bought this book set as I was going on a major dive trip and Mr. Paul Humann was going to be there. What an amazing trip that was!! Mr. Humann is a real down to earth guy and signed all three copies of my book set. Apart from this, I'm really impressed with the quality of the books and the in depth information. A lot of research went into this book set and it well worth the price. I would highly recommend this for any scuba diver, especially in the Caribbean and Florida region.
This 3 volume set is the most complete set of all the fish, creatures, and coral in the Caribbean. These could actually be used as college text material, they are that excellent. Great pictures and descriptions, even letting you know how they act around humans. You can't go wrong with this set, and it is much cheaper than buying them separately. I only wish the set would have included the two books they have on reef fish and reef creature behavior. They are a must buy also, if you are really into what is out there in the beautiful ocean.
My wife and I live on the island of St. Croix. We dive every weekend, and have 147 dives since Nov. 1. We spend a lot of time under the surface of the water. I work full time, she is employed part-time...neither in the Dive industry. There is not a single dive which we come up from that we don't refer to one or more of Humann's reference books. They could not be better, graphically. And we find his descriptions and behaviorial characterizations to be right on! Just last week on a night dive, we were convinced that a shark which approached us could not be a Nurse Shark due to its gray-whiteish coloration. That particular shark had been identified (incorrectly) as always being a brownish, dark color by another identificaiton guide. When we arrived home, pulled out Humann's Reef Fish and read, sure enough it is often grayish and a light color in addition to the brown/brackish coloration on occasion. So, there was not any reason to make that mess in my dive suit, had I studied Humann's identification, I would have realized that HUGE critter was just being curious, not looking at us as the MAIN COURSE! WE LOVE THESE BOOKS! Every dive shop here uses them religiously.
I wish I had bought these books long ago. They are perfect for fish, creature and coral identification after shooting a bunch of pictures while snorkeling. I like to know what I've seen and label my pictures with accurate names and these books enable me to do just that. Before I bought these books I would be sooo frustrated to have no label under the pictue of an awesome looking fish or coral. I don't think the label "cool fish" or " pretty coral" is very interesting or informative, do you? The detailed information & good pictures in The Reef Set makes labeling my pictures very easy. If you want to know what you saw while snorkeling or diving these books are a worthwhile investment. Do keep in mind that these books are for Florida, Caribbean and Bahamas areas only.
