I may be one of the first people to use this new book, because it was released just days before my wife and I started our own Camino. We did the first 11 days of the Camino de Santiago starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, and ending in Nájera, Spain. We'll continue from there next year. I liked this book so much that I decided to take it with us as our only guide book, and I was glad I did.First impression: it's beautiful! Stunning photos, great maps, and directions that make sense. I especially like the detailed list of albergues in each town, complete with prices and icons showing their amenities. The book covers the entire route all the way to Finisterre and Muxia, with daily stages of around 25km (15.5mi) per day. You can, of course, finish your day anywhere you like, but the stages often end in the larger towns with more options for places to stay and eat, as well as resources such as pharmacies, ATM machines, etc. Each stage begins with an overview including the distance, difficulty, average number of hours, and a breakdown of the percentage of time you'll spend on paved vs. unpaved pathways. It then includes a description of what you'll be facing that day, along with an elevation chart and a map showing all towns and the amenities you can expect to find there (albergues, food, shopping, etc.) It then walks you through each town you'll be visiting, and describes points of interest as well as warnings for things to watch out for (like the lack of water between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles). Each town has a sidebar with a listing of places to stay, each with its price, contact details, and amenities (food, washer, dryer, kitchen, WiFi, number of beds, etc.) Maps are also included for the larger towns, with all places to stay marked on the map. We always found it easy to understand the differences between the albergues, and to find them once we arrived in the town. The book also includes a lot of nice information in the introductory chapters, including a history of the Camino, when to go, how to get there, visas, the various types of places to stay and eat, costs, safety issues, packing lists, and lots more. This information is expanded even further on the book's extensive web site, including links to many of the sites and places to stay that are listed in each stage.Since many people seem to be using John Brierley's book, A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino de Santiago, I'll make a few quick comparisons. The distances between places are different than in the Brierley book. This book resets the distance to zero at the beginning of each stage, and then shows the cumulative distance until the end of the stage. 0.0, 3.2, 6.8, 12.0, 18.5, etc. Whereas Brierley shows the distance from place to place and not the cumulative distance. 0.0, 3.3, 1.5, 2.7, etc. I like this book's way better, at least if your stages mostly line up with the book's. If you end up staying at a town that's not at the beginning of a stage though, your numbers will be off a bit the next day. That happened to us occasionally, but it wasn't a big problem. This book is 2.8 cubic inches (46 cu cm) larger and 3.4 ounces (96 g) heavier than Brierley's. Partly because it includes Finisterre and Muxia, but mostly because the general tone of the writing is much more relaxed and less terse, with larger pictures. Although it's a bit wider than Brierley's, I had no problem carrying it in a side pocket of my pants so it was always available. And since we were only doing the first 11 days, I removed the last two thirds of the pages to cut down on weight -- the authors suggest doing exactly that actually, for pages you've already used along the way. I carefully compared the directions for the multiple paths leading into Burgos, and both books cover all the details about equally well -- I feel certain I could find my way with either one. But there's no question that I prefer the tone of this one.One of the best items on the book's web site is a downloadable GPS track of the entire Camino, including alternate pathways. I imported the data into the fantastic "GPS Kit" iPhone app and then cached the maps near the paths. I was then always able to see at a glance where we were in relation to the marked pathway, as well as the distance and direction to any point on the map -- all without a data connection.Overall I was quite happy with our time with this book on the Camino, and I'll be taking it next year when we continue. I definitely recommend it.

I originally purchased the other famous Camino book for planning our pilgrimage, but it didn't quite hit the spot. This book, however, has a perfect 35 day trip plan - exactly what we were looking for. The maps are incredibly well done and very detailed - they even have elevation information. As I started to admire all the cool things - the maps I could easily understand, the albergue information - complete with ratings and prices, gorgeous photos, what to expect in each village, etc... I mentioned to my husband how cool the book was.. soon he was reading it with me and shortly thereafter he had taken it over completely and was excitedly telling me how cool this book was. Hopefully it will be my turn soon!UPDATE: Another bonus: If you don't know Spanish, there are some helpful phrases in the back of the book. Every time I get some time to read this handy guide, I find more to like!

I have been researching the Camino for a writing project I am engaged in, so have checked out a number of different guidebooks and Internet resources, but nothing has compared to Hiking the Camino de Santiago by this hiking and writing team. Every stage of the Camino is covered, including each minor town between the stages, and helpful and INTERESTING information is shared on every page - historical information, practical information, local information, as well as anecdotes about all the many Camino-related legends. The book also has a lovely layout, with scores of graphs and maps and sidebars; facts about elevations and temperatures and road/trail types; language tips; albergue (hostel) tips, and on and on. It also shares information about how to prepare to hike the Camino, so you'll be ready to hit and enjoy the trail when you get there.Importantly the book also treats the faith-related aspects of the Camino with respect and nuance. The writing is warm and engaging. You'll enjoy walking the Camino with this husband-and-wife team who possess a treasure trove of hiking experience, not only on the Camino but on other trails throughout the world.A truly spectacular book!

Every guidebook to the Camino de Santiago has certain features in common--a route description broken into 29-32 stages, functional maps, accommodation listings, and historical blurbs on spots along the way. At this point, the distances between villages are roughly standardized and most stages are loosely in sync. Quite simply, any guide (or app, for that matter) could do the job pretty well. What makes Anna and David's guidebook stand out to me is the visually striking design, which maximizes the efficiency of each page without sacrificing any bit of appeal. The color coded stages make for easy navigation, while the accommodation icons help you to quickly assess whether a particular hostal has the amenities you seek. The content packed in around the margins--elevation profiles for all stages inside the front cover, a quick breakdown of pavement/trail in each stage under the heading, and even translations of place names--all add value without adding pages. And the maps! The maps are among the best you'll find in any pilgrimage guidebook, with excellent representation of each stage as a whole, complemented with zoomed in shots of each town. For those who have used a previous edition of this guide, it's worth noting that they have continued to reduce the size; per their website, the 2017 edition is 20% lighter and 30% thinner than the 2016 version. Finally, the guidebook is backed by a very helpful website, where it's possible to find updates and direct links to the accommodations included in the book.Disclosure: I was given a copy of the 2017 edition by David, but I purchased a previous edition of the book (and will likely purchase another edition at some point down the road).

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Excerpts from 15-year-old Becca's diary interspersed with third-person narrative combine to produce a tale of high adventure, intrigue, and science fiction along the China coast in 1920. Following their parents' mysterious disappearance in the remote Sinkiang region, Becca and her younger brother, Doug, are sent from their home in India to live with their sea-captain uncle, whose research vessel they board in Shanghai. Through their inquisitiveness and spying, they learn of a secret society that may have had something to do with their parents' fate and of a very volatile substance called zoridium that their uncle is trying to retrieve from an evil warlord. Their curiosity leads to their capture and captivity on his island fortress–the site of a rousing showdown that sets the stage for the second volume in this trilogy. Memorable, over-the-top characters and an often unbelievable plot are united with fascinating sidebars and graphics, such as short biographies of people like Bohr and Einstein, archival photographs of old Shanghai, vintage newspaper clippings, a chart of the Morse code, diagrams of inventions, or Doug's sketches of the action scenes. Several confidential full-color pull-outs provide detailed descriptions of the various vessels and of an ancient fighting order, the Sujing Quantou. Some readers may pore over the details in this novel; others will simply appreciate the comic adventure.–Diane S. From Booklist

Gr. 8--11. The first book of the Guild Trilogy quickly and deftly plunges readers into an exotic corner of the first quarter of the twentieth century. Teenage siblings Rebecca and Douglas run through a series of adventures in a submarine, on the streets of Shanghai, and among pirates. They are bold, inquisitive, and creative, and they leave behind for readers'inspection numerous documents of their adventures, including Becca's diary, Doug's sketches, and such visual artifacts as maps and photos. First-time novelist Mowll spins a heady yarn, and his characters have some distinctive traits: Doug's speech, for example, is peppered with the term lethal. The reproductions, which are highly detailed, look suitably authentic and will have great appeal for readers who thrive on schematics and puzzles. By the end of the story, Becca and Doug have survived a variety of terrifying exploits and are still in search of their missing parents. A sequel will find a ready audience. #1,128,287 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Lots of nice illustrations, the author clearly researched the period and setting. The goofy gravity-control maguffin is presented interestingly. However, I've never really liked the "secret powerful organization centuries old, with secret technology and secret magic, secretly super-rich and able to control governments ... and they're the good guys" meme. The organization has secret ninja friends, secret fighting techniques ... the author doesn't want the protagonists to have negative or critical thoughts about their organization, I suppose. I got this (and the other two) as a gift for a friend who's running a role-playing game. The background and historical information should prove useful.

A very fun and engaging story set in a time and place I know very little about. The artwork, fold-outs and gee-wiz aspects of the story are especially well done. Some of the writing is a little flat; not up to the standards set by the artwork. I bought the book for me and am very pleased to report that one of my boys (age 11) has picked it up and is quite engrossed.

This book was well loved by 9 year old from whom it was a gift. Very fun read for him and me.

I enjoyed this story but I felt it was a bit rushed. I wish more time had been taken in each chapter with character and other details before the reader is thrown headlong into adventures. I almost felt like I was reading an abridged version of a much longer book. However I did like the maps, diagrams and photos.

This young adult book by Joshua Mowll is the first of a trilogy, although it can be read as an independent story. It can be described as a cross between Alex Rider, Indiana Jones, and The Da Vinci Code.Set in 1920s, it features two teenage siblings aged 13 & 15, Bec and Doug McKenzie. Their parents have disappeared, and they find themselves under the care of their uncle on his ship the Expedient. But what strange resource is the ship engaged with? They begin uncovering more and more secrets, and soon find themselves in the middle of fast paced action involving a pirate warlord, powerful weapons, a secret Chinese society, and exciting gun battles. The story is deliberately over-the-top, which will appeal to teens especially. A unique feature of the book is how it purports to be the result of research discovered by the author, Joshua Mowll, some 80 years later. All kinds of elaborate diagrams, photos, maps, documents, and illustrations are included, to give this a sense of being faux-history, and these visual elements really do add to the appeal. The story line is quite fast paced and suspenseful, although at times it felt a bit flat, and I was disappointed to come across a few instances of blasphemy and language like "hell". Despite some weaknesses, it's still a decent adventure story, and teens will probably enjoy it quite a bit. - GODLY GADFLY (April 2018)

This is possibly the best read I have had this year! Not only has Joshua Mowll created an amazing story (which harkens back to the old-time radio programs such as Jack Armstrong, Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police or The Air Adventures of Jimmy Allen), the design of the book, the fold-out illustrations, the internal illustrations are nothing short of beautiful, fascinating and inspiring, to say the very least. The story, a tale of a sister and brother who begin their adventure in the 1920s Far East, is fast-paced, action-oriented, wonderfully structured, and just 'plain fun' to read, and follows their journey with an uncle (a mysterious ship's captain) they have been shunted to while their parents have gone missing in Sinkiang region of China. The uncle, apparently the member of a secret society, leads them from one cliffhanging situation to another, and leaves the reader wanting and needing more. This is, apparently, the first of a trilogy. I've already read the story three times, and cannot get enough. And while you may find this novel in the Young Adult section of most bookstores, any adult would enjoy this fictional ride. Cheers to Mr. Mowll for this inventive book, creative style, and originally mysterious plot!

Let's begin by stating that this book is well designed. The drawings and diagrams of the vehicles, weapons, devices, etc were great. The detail was very interesting and well appreciated. That being said, I thought the story was good, but not great. I am keeping in mind the fact that this is the first book in a trilogy. I didn't find the two children's characters to be very likable. They lie and go around the adults in the quest to find their parents. I hope the characters are further developed as the story continues. The story involves the writer who inherits a house full of secret information regarding the Guild of Specialists. The writer publishes the findings from his aunts archives, and thus the story. It is a very good premise, but as I mentioned the characters are a little weak.I would recommend this books to young readers. The story is paced well and moves quickly. Some of the terms and devices described in the sotry may be a little too technical for the younger group (third graders), but I feel they would still enjoy it.

This is a Childs book, but written in a curiously adult way. Consequently the characters are to say a little one dimensional (Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, and plenty of cannon fodder in between!), but the historical/geographical context in which the book is set is extremely captivating. The presentation of the book is superb, with excellent facsimile documents and photographs, made to look like a real journal, beautiful fold out maps and schematics of Ships, and submarines, captivate me now, never mind as a child. The story is fast paced and has an authenticity to it. A real Indiana Jones meets the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Enough to stimulate the imagination of any reader.

Wow, I wanted to read this book to get specific info to better argue with my son - who is getting further and further to the left as he continues to hang around in Manhattan, at work. Given Jonah's columns, which I read often, and the cover art on the book, I had assumed this would be right up my alley, since he is usually so concise and well thought out, expressing my thoughts well, without being dry or preachy. Boy, was I wrong.Jonah is a really smart guy, and I like him a lot, but this is not at all in the style of his columns. This is a textbook, and if you're looking for some easy talking points, you won't find them here.I tried to read this book, even when I discovered it to be so dry, because like a bad movie, I kept waiting for the good part. 4 months later, I'm only a third of the way through. I just can't make myself read it. It is genuinely a text book, and not at all written for the casual reader. There are plenty of good points in there, and if you were giving a lecture on the subject, this would be a handy reference guide, but nothing presented (at least in the first 3rd of the book) is usable in conversation with a non-believer.I already knew the basic premise of the book, and long ago had the same beliefs, but without proof, my son is not willing to listen to my "beliefs". I thought this would be the perfect gift for him, to help him see the light. Unfortunately, I can't give him a book I can't even get through - and I already care.I'm no dummy, and it's not that I can't grasp what he's saying, but frankly, I don't care that much. For those already in agreement, this is too much like work, and for those who don't believe the premise, they won't do this much work only to prove themselves wrong. Absent a school assignment, I don't really see how this scholarly a book is of any value to the general public.Sorry, Jonah. Love you, Love your columns, but this is not a good read. Here’s my take on Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg. I have rated it four stars because it is an intriguing book filled with valuable historical information but I did not rate it five stars because of the direction Goldberg takes that information. The premise of Liberal Fascism is that conservatism (properly, classical liberalism) is defined as limited government, free markets, property rights, low taxes, etc. It is the time honored and original intent of the Founding Fathers (page 290). Anything that differs or deviates from conservatism is heresy and, therefore, undesirable (p. 4). Fascism and liberalism both differ from conservatism and are heresy; they are interchangeable (p. 7).Conservatism, on the other hand, is the party of the status quo (p. 59). Conserving the status quo should be the primary aim of government. According to Goldberg, “liberals are the aggressors in the culture wars” and it is the obligation of conservatives to defend “against the so-called forces of progress” (p. 360).American fascism began in the Progressive era and is the basis of modern fascism (p. 2). He calls it smiley-face or “nice fascism” (p. 8). It gained momentum at the hands of Pres. Woodrow Wilson and Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt. We are living today with the fascist legacy they bequeathed us (p. 303). What makes American fascism so sinister, he says, is that the state has the right to mandate that citizens be healthy and decent and humane and good and happy whether we want to or not (p. 15, 19, 21, 23, 131). He derides “compassionate conservatism” (p. 399-401), and is unequivocal that the eight-hour workday (p. 15, 91, 95), child labor laws (p. 15, 69, 91) and universal healthcare (p. 95, 340-341) among others are all symptomatic of fascism. As for totalitarianism, it, too, is “nice” and, by definition, “holistic” (p. 14, 15). Of course, “good totalitarianism” can easily descend into bad totalitarianism, the stuff of “nightmares” which I think is the fear that Goldberg wants to instill in the reader (p. 185, 350).It seems to me that Liberal Fascism is a sort of conspiracy theory in which all shades of liberalism/progressivism are assumed to be striving to undermine or overthrow historical conservatism. By labeling beneficial government services (Social Security, Medicare, ACA, etc.) as fascist, Goldberg stigmatizes them and paints them with a conservative negative bias that is so pervasive in current Republican politics. Finally, on page 211, Goldberg describes the “fascist playbook” and unwittingly gives a perfect description of Pres. Donald Trump. He says the fascist leader utilizes: “the creation of crises, nationalistic appeals to unity, the celebration of martial values, the blurring of lines between public and private sectors, the utilization of mass media to glamorize the state and its programs, invocations of a new ‘post-partisan’ spirit that places the important decisions in the hands of experts and intellectual supermen, and a cult of personality for the national leader.”

This book is a great read and timely despite the fact it was written in 2008, almost 10 years before the rise of ANTIFA (the modern fascist group ironically calling themselves ANTIFA which is short for anti-fascists), and is more about the history of early 20th century progressive fascism than about today's fascists movements.Goldberg first details the rise of Mussolini's Fascist party and the common tactics shared by its socialists kin, Hitler's National Socialist party (the Nazis) and Stalin's Communist party. Goldberg then explains how progressives have, over the years, inaccurately (for the most part) redefined Fascism to be associated with the right despite its origins on the left. Next, Goldberg recounts some of the most Fascist administrations in American History including, President Wilson and FDR. Finally, Goldberg also impartially describes how even some people on the right have and continue to use fascist tactics, but to a much lessor degree.

Goldberg doesn't argue that leftists are Hitler. Rather, he cautions the reader to beware of government that seeks to fix all your problems or tells you what you must give up for the common good. For fascists, nothing is outside the state. For classical liberals (not progressives), the impulse is for more of our lives to be conducted away from the state. The same is not true of progressivism. This was a great read!

Well documented proof that fascism is and always was a monster of the left. Communism and fascism are not opposites, as the left would have us believe, but siamese twins joined at the head with a small brain of a tyrant.

One of my all time favorite books. This book did more to explain the Nazis than any history class. Read it for the history read it again to learn the lessons of not repeating history.

Ok here's my rant about this. While I totally appreciated how clear and concise this order was concerning the reading of Diana G's fabulous adventures, when it was mentioned on a Ourlander's page, I was blasted by the author herself. She wanted to know "what kind of idiot" would buy this addendum to her readings. So, if this is not sanctioned by her, please do not present as such.

It's just a list of all writings by Diana Gabaldon. Very handy, if you're one of her avid reading audience, like I am. Once I finish my re-read of her Outlander series, it will be time to read up on Lord John Grey. Goody!

The links do not work. Diana's web site is more handy. Do not waste your money. Author's should provide a little description of each book.

This is not actually a book with a story or plot, it is simply a list of the books in the outlander series with a basic story line for each of them. I bought it so I would have a reference for the order I should read them in.

This book offers assistance to any reader trying to decide what order to read the books in the Outlander/Lord John Grey series'. There are so many books in these series, and it can be time consuming to decide how they fit into a logical timeline - but this book has done it all for you. They are listed in order by publish date, and also by story timeline chronology, making it easy to choose which to read next. Well done!

This wasn't really what I thought it was going to be. I may have just purchased it too quickly without reading the description. However it does exactly what it says, lists the reading order. I think I was expecting a bit more information as to why a certain order especially with the story line including outlander series and Lord John Grey novels.

I really like this because it makes it so much easier to keep up with all of Diana Gabaldon's books. I know now what comes next in my reading order, and I know what all of those offshoot books are. It is just several comprehensive lists that allow you to keep her writings straight. I also like the feature in my Kindle version where a book that has been read can be checked off the list. Very useful.

Necessary book for me to keep on track with all the Outlander and other Gabaldon reading series.

I credit this book for quickly getting me up and running 11gR2 on Red Hat Linux. I have years of experience running Oracle on Microsoft Windows servers but I'm new to Linux and this book showed me the way and the tools I would need for installing and navigating Linux O/S, X11, VNC, ASM and bash shell. Great resource and time saver.

Very good mix of relevant OS and Oracle topics. A great reference book for a Linux Oracle DBA, or someone who has to manage a database on Linux, but doesn't have an Oracle DBA background.

Well written, has enough of the facts to be a good guide, scripts are good examples, well explained. This is more of a how than a why book. Product arrived on time and was as advertised.

If you can write c and korn shell script then save your $.

It is wornderful book for DBA's who are trying to switch to LInux platform. Equally useful for others too because I learnt Oracle as well as Linux from this. Please bring these types of books for Unix. and other dedicated topics likeExport/import recipies, Migration recipies etcWow! wonderful

You really need to understand your Linux before taking on this book, and you probably want a good understanding of Oracle as well.

The book was in good condition and looks new. Also it was delivered on time. Great deal for the price.!!

This is an excellent Linux reference for an Oracle DBA.The chapters are as follows:Chapter 1 - Getting StartedChapter 2 - Working in the ShellChapter 3 - Managing Processes and UsersChapter 4 - Creating and Editing FilesChapter 5 - Managing Files and DirectoriesChapter 6 - Archiving and Compressing FilesChapter 7 - Shell ScriptingChapter 8 - Analyzing Server PerformanceChapter 9 - Viewing and Configuring System ResourcesChapter 10 - Managing Server SoftwareChapter 11 - Automating JobsChapter 12 - Implementing ASM on LinuxChapter 13 - Implementing RAC on LinuxChapter 14 - Working Securely Across a NetworkChapter 15 - Managing X WindowsChapter 16 - Managing Remote Servers with VNCThere are also two Appendixes:A - RAID ConceptsB - Server Log FilesMy favorite parts were Chapter 7 and Chapter 11. For DBA's, it is very powerfull to understand how to write shell scripts and automate them. Also, Chapters 12 and 13 are great references for a DBA who has to implement ASM and RAC on Linux. My Linux admin has also used these chapters to look at some OS configuration issues with RAC and ASM as well as querying disks with oracleasm (for ASMLIB).Definitely a great resource that has clear and concise steps to follow to get things up and running. No fluff here.
